Default 1957 E-code Question

I've got a '57 Sunliner that I want to do a little work on this winter. The car is a D-code but had an E-code dual quad set-up installed in the early 60's. I'm planning on going back to the original 4 barrel intake and carb. What I'm wondering is what parts are specific to the E-code set-up. I'm planning on doing the swap over the winter and want to keep the E-code set-up complete so I'll buy replacement parts for the swap. I've got a nice D-code spread bore intake, carb and air cleaner. I realize the garbage can fuel filter, associated fuel lines and valley pan are specific to the E-code, but what else? Is the distributor E-code specific? Thermostat housing,? There's no bell crank on the dual quad intake so I assume all the throttle linkage is E-code specific?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Allan

The thermostat housings are not E-code specific.
If the fuel filter is an original, the E-code ones are bigger hi-flow versions. Yours doesn't look like the single 4bbl ones.
Distributors - There are only a few hi-perf original versions (not counting the F-code tuned one) I'm not sure which you have, the vacuum diaphragm isn't on the outside like I was expecting. If it's one of the original hi-perf Ford distributors it should have FEJ, FEK or FEH for the casting # prefix.
http://www.ford-y-block.com/distributors.htm
It should be possible to identify the one you have if it isn't 'Ford'.
I've attached pictures of a 57 T-Bird FEJ dist.

Disclaimer: I've never had my hands on an E-code car, or researched y-block distributors more than to identify the one on my T-Bird.

There is a specific part number for the "E" dizzy in the passenger cars.

I will look it up if requested too.

Manifold hold down clamps are unique to the "E" setup both on T Birds and passenger cars. The ones you have are "E" code correct.

Coil hold down bracket is specific to "E" codes.

Wiring loom in the engine compartment has a longer coil wire for "E" codes so its a different harness

That linkage connecting the carbs is correct for passenger car "E" code setup HOWEVER the accelerator rod connected to the dual quad linkage is specific to an overdrive transmission.

Speaking of transmission - "E" code vehicles used a specific automatic transmission which is the same as the "F" code vehicles.

Theres probably a few more things but that's all that come to mind immeadently.

Thanks to both of you for all the good info. The car is a 3 speed OD car.... good eye! Is the accelerator linkage different for a 4 barrel car with overdrive? If you wouldn't mind checking on the part number for the distributor I'd appreciate it. How are the manifold hold down clamps different on an "E" code?
Here are a couple more photos; any comments are appreciated.

Thanks again.

Your fuel filter sure looks like the E-Code correct one to me.

As promised - the part number IN THE BOOKS for the "E" passenger car dizzy is

B7A 12127-E

The number cast on the dizzy would be FEH12127C

The "E" clamps are a bit longer in length than the regular hold downs.

The O.D. throttle rod is the same on the regular 4 BBL setup and the "E" setup for passenger car applications.

Now - Tit for Tat - Please tell me the numbers on the top of the trash can filter AND on the very bottom of the filter can is either a small dimple OR a flat spot the size of a quarter.

Which one do you have?

Inquiring minds want to know

Where would the part number be on the distributor. I took a quick look and couldn't see one but it was difficult to see the passenger side of the distributor. The distributor does not have an external vacuum advance as seen in dmsfrr's photos.

When I first saw your distributor I thought it was a Mallory because of the long extension for the oiler, but then I found this-

I think the vacuum advance is internal on this Holley dual point, which was identified as "rare" by the image poster. Here is the website info- http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic69942.aspx

You will need a road draft tube - get rid of the crank case vent - TBirds didn't have them.

It's not a T-bird. It's a Sunliner. Pass cars didn't use the rear mounted road draft tubes to my knowledge. I thought they used the road draft tube that was mounted on the left front of the block towards the bottom.

Do not forget that the valley cover is specific for the factory 2x4 intake, other intakes will fit ,but other valley covers will not work with the factory 2x4 intake.

spdster - This is an old post that was apparently answered way back then.

The original post was by Al T, about a Sunliner.

His last comment was in Oct. of '14.
