I work on magnetos a lot for the helicopters. They wear out and the magnet can lose it's gauss strength over time. All this can be repaired but finding parts may be unobtainium on odd ball units unless they are based on another manufacturers design with readily available parts that will fit. I would recommend staying with proven designs where parts are available for them. If it is a Scintilla/Vertex design the just get a Vertex.

I think rotorwrench makes good points. Golden oldie parts look nice but
may have irreplaceable parts. Go with modern stuff.

That’s a vertex Krag is just the rebuilder
Many rebuild Vertex parts readily available
Been around forever are good if that’s what you want & is set up correctly as far as advance for application
Cheers

I had a Cirello "Frankenstein" magneto on the early hemi in my vintage dirt modified. When the car became hard to start, I started looking around for someplace to go through it and recharge the magnets. I was surprised how easy it was to find a place that would service it. I subsequently found out that it was a rare and desireable unit.

The Krag was a modification of the Vertex. Krag decided the rare earth magnets would be better than the OEM iron core types but there are several things to consider about those type magnets. They are very brittle and also tend to oxidize rather rapidly unless the magnets are plated with something to help slow that. They also are limited on how much heat they can take. They are stronger in magnetic field strength than an iron core magnet by a good bit but with the other possible problems, I don't know how well they would hold up. I've worked with some rare earth magnets and I've noticed that they break easily. Most Scintilla/Vertex type mags are centrifugal advance only so they are more geared toward racing. They would be less fuel efficient for street use but they do work OK. What else Krag may have changed on the design, I have no idea.

You can change the advance plates, modify the drive and user it in a Flathead! They work great and with rare-earth magnets, you don't have to recharge them like you do with the standard magnets. It is still a good idea to have the magneto checked out before you run it (always a good thing).
