Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
I am wondering if using some valve grinding compound under the heads when tightening screws like open vehicle stanchion screws, molding screws for example would help or prevent the paint from chipping. A little compound could be applied under the head and then tighten the screw loosely and unscrewed it several times to "grind" some of the paint away. I had an unfortunate experience when I tried to install the rear window frame in my 28 coupe and the paint chipped badly when I tighten the screws to install the frame. I know that applying less paint around the screw holes would help, as Brent Terry told me, but sometimes that can't be done or wasn't done. I have also heard that using some plastic under the screw head would help prevent chipping, like Jim Brand told me. It seems like auto paint tends to chip fairly easily and I don't want to have to repaint parts if the paint chips when tightening the various screws on my vehicles when installing them. I am looking for some good advice from people that have encountered this concern before and found a good solution to paint chipping. Any helpful input would be appreciated.

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
The paint pros would tell you a properly applied finish won't chip. Meaning the substrate primer very minimal, but I'm with you, easier said than done.
I have had some success with those beveled stainless washers that are almost invisible. Similar to the ones on the lug nut holes, but much smaller. They come in many sizes. |

A bit of soap or grease under the head. I had a friend of mine that built show cars and he said he's trick was to tighten each fastener 1/2 a turn a day until tight. Must have worked as he won Pebble Beach 3 times.

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
REALLY SMALL rubber "O" rings, placed on the screw threads, will do the job.

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
I am not sure I believe you gustafson. I am using high quality paint! It is PPG Concept or DuPont ChromaPremier depending on the color. It will still chip if you aren't careful when installing screws. I have painted a fair amount and I know paint will chip.

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
i don't think it is a matter of belief, but experience and application.
We use nothing but PPG and have never had this happen. proper prep and quality paint is the key |

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
Doesn't matter what paint you use. If you have a thick substrate ( surfacer) it will chip out if it's too thick.
Building surfacers are part of the prep mentioned above. Excessive will chip. |

Re: Preventing paint chipping when tightening screws
I thought beeswax was pretty good for this.
