Default How to remove rivets from front cross member

I have to replace the front cross member in my coupe. What is an easy way to remove the rivets from the cross member? Drill out, chisel, burn them off, grind them off, ????? Any easy way ideas would be appreciated. I have fenders off, motor out so have good access. Thanks

I have used the special tool available through the various suppliers with excellent success. This tool allows you to center the rivet accuratly with a 3/16" drill bit.
You only then need to drill into the rivet about 1/4" or less. Using a heavy chisel and heavy hammer, with vise grips holding the chisel, you should be able to knock the rivet head off. Wear leather gloves and safety glasses. Remainder of rivet can then be driven out with a set punch.

I have removed a lot of rivets in the frame
i just use a cold chisel and knock the heads off ,then using a punch and 3 lb hammer knock them through usually takes just a couple of minutes each and no damage is done
havnt had one problem doing that
the indented ones will have to be drilled carefully.and then punched out

I grind rivet heads of . . regardless of where they are. It always works, then drive it out.

What Glenn said. No gouging of grinding of the frame is possible using the tool.

I have posted another thread on what this cross member looks like and my challenge to get it out along with trying to get the front spring and front end out of the rig.
