Is there supposed to be a hardened disk that fits between the axle end and the pushing bolt to protect the axle?

I have that puller also, I turn the axle nut over and put it back on the axle to protect the threads.

Thanks I use this puller on some of my other vehicles ,40's 50's mopars and my 62 willys wagon, but it looked different then what the vendors sell so I figured best to check 1st then do any damage.

If the drums are not on real tight that should work. The main problem is if the drum is tight most people just keep pulling and banging until they have done some damage. They don't know when to stop and get the correct puller, they just get a bigger hammer and a longer wrench. The puller that grabs the snout of the drum is really the one to use.

Mitchell makes a really neat hub puller, will work on both type of hubs. Very reasonably priced as well, and last time I checked, shipping was only $5 -- even to Alaska!

Hey Aok,
Hm, if you have a drum on there that you are not worried about...if it is damaged or not..go for it, might ..as they say..get lucky !

However, if the drum was properly installed/torqued and mabe loong time on there, specific removers were/are made to protect drum/axle,etc. Without proper tool, some use bfh/heat and a bunch of other methods..to take a 'chance' !

I would be cautious. If its a tough one, you can easily warp the hub with that type.

The 3 Legged Pullers have been used for Years, just use TLC with the puller, and it will do the job. Make sure you back off all brake adjusters all the way, If your brake shoes are froze on the inside of the drum, you will have to use some heat, not alot, to the outer surface to try to break them free. Let it cool, (expand and contract).

Put moderate tension on the puller Bolt or handle, hit the end of the Screw Bolt with a hammer a few blows. I use a 2 lbs. hammer, if it doesn't come loose, add more tension, heat again, let it sit, come back with the hammer again. for stubborn froze drums, I use a 3 ft bar, in the spokes of the puller and gently rock it back and forth also. It will eventually come off, I have had some under tension for 3 or 4 days.

Drums came off easy the right side poped which is what they usually do when torqued properly which is why it is good to keep the nut on the end.
The left side the axle nut was evidently not tight enough it came off with almost no effort so as expected that drum came off real easy. Shoes look good at least for a few thousand more miles. I checked the drums about .125 right and .129 left. I put everything back together and torqued to about 110.
Maybe do the brakes next year but for now just wanted to be sure I would be ok for the summer.
