STP product for transmission?
Which is the correct STP product to purchase for adding to my 600W transmission oil?
I use John Deere Corn Head Grease in my steering box. |

Re: STP product for transmission?
If you have the proper oil in the trans--rear you don't need any additives

Re: STP product for transmission?
We have been using 50/50 STP with 600w oil in transmission and rear end. John Deere Cornhead grease in steering box and u-joint, full tube if empty.
Many different views on this. It’s like a restaurant menu, I like fish, you like steak. Enjoy. |

Is STP Oil Treatment the correct product? That is my question.
I do have 600W oil in both the rear end and transmission. Just need to top off transmission till I replace the drain plug. I like walleye. |

Re: STP product for transmission?
Yes, STP Oil Treatment is often referred to.
Depending on your climate & mix ratio, it could make shifting difficult until warmed up.

Don't use any grease in the steering gearbox. The worm gear bearings don't like it. |

Don't use grease in the steering gear box. Worm gear bearing don't like it. 600 wt is what is recommended.

Re: STP product for transmission?
I use straight STP in my Transmission, the cluster gear moves the STP up so it is re-lubing the parts al the time. I also use some STP in the differential, the ring gear moves it up so it is re-lubing all the parts.
I do not put STP in my engine as it will all end up in the bottom of the pan, nothing to move it up, to heavy for the oil pump to move. The transmission shifts like a dream. Been doing this for many years and have not had any problems. Ron |

Re: STP product for transmission?
You can purchase higher viscosity gear oils through Restoration Supply in Escondido CA. I have bought 1200 and 1500 there before, and they have others. Don't see it...call them.

Re: STP product for transmission?
Here's a question from left field. Why not use a modern EP oil in the diff? I wouldn't use it in the gearbox but see no reason it shouldn't be used in the diff.
I suspect it would do its job better than 600W and being a lower viscosity, would cause less "drag". Has anybody done that and what were the results?

Re: STP product for transmission?
Ok, there are all kinds of different feelings of what works best in the trans. Some have proposed the gear head oil, and been told that it is probably to thick. I THINK that it is a "O" grease. If that is so, Has anybody ever thought of using a "OO" grease ? I am using oo in my steering box. It is not nearly as thick as O. I am familiar with it as having been a Snapper dealer for many many years it is used in all the transmissions and gearboxes on snapper equipment,(except hydro of course). Snapper at one time years ago tried using "O" grease, but found out that it wouldn't run back, and promptly said to go back to "OO" . I believe it is spec'd for all type of gears.

Re: STP product for transmission?
100% STP in the transmission and steering box is what Roger Kauffman, the MARC tech advisor ran for many years with great success. He drove his Model A's to all the meets, and wrote a big article for the MARC NEWS about a trip from Ohio to the West and back in his Tudor....I have to believe the STP worked well.

Yes to the Deere Corn Head grease in steering box. Capacity is HALF a tube.

Re: STP product for transmission?
A transmission rebuilder told me about 20 years ago that stp was not designed to cling to spinning gears, have never used and have not had any issues, also will stp blend with oil if you do not agitate it?

Re: STP product for transmission?
I've used the 6ooW gear oil like Brattons and Snyders sells With no real problems . I think that the gear oil that many model A parts venders offer is a mixture of 250 weight gear oil and STP . I never felt that it needed anymore viscosity boosters than it already had . I've used straight STP but after a while the car that was running straight STP shifted harder and slower than the the model A Vender 600 W oil . I decided to experiment. I remember that my Dad told me that 90 weight or 140 or what they sold at the service stations would work fine . I tried it again and for me 90 weight works good . I can glide smoothly through the gears. I don't wait a long time between gears. With a non sycronized transmission its all about equalizing engine speed with wheel speed . Its an aquired feel , If a person can master this procedure they will have clash free shifts . A lighter flywheel Helps a lot .
