Default AA axles worth anything?

I recently found 3 front axles and rear ends from some AA trucks. Some rears look like the have auxillary gears? The frames are there but really rough and cut up. The axles are complete with drums. Is is worth my time to dig them out and see if somebody could use them or should I just let them sleep longer?

If the rear axles have the 5.14 rear end ratios, they are worth checking out further. Like Pat says go over to the AA board and you will get all kinds of good info.

I agree - if the rears have the 5.14:1 gears, they would be worth something, especially to an AA'er who'd like to go a bit faster. Also, if any of the axles have the later cast iron brake drums, they might be worth saving. You can ID those by the small, square-ish bumps cast in the drum, about 180 degrees apart, right where the drum meets the backing plate. The pressed steel drums do not have these there.

Even if they are the LOW speed axles...if any of the inside parts are fairly decent and still usable...I mean price some of those bearings or axles shafts out and you will see what I mean!...the only difference between a high speed and low speed are the drive gears themselves (ring and pinion and/or worm gear) plus the speedometer gear. (Did I miss anything?).

I tore apart 3 worm drive rear axles...the first the worm drive and ring gear were shot, loose bearings (High Speed); the second everything was fine but was a Low Speed, bearings tight and decent; the third was great all the way around and was a High Speed...not much wear on on anything.

Pull the speedo drive. The rear end ratio is stamped on them.

Not sure the AA axles are worth much, been trying to gat $150 out of a front end and rear end for afew years. Not sure if it the rear is the later ratio or not. The drive shaft and torque tube were shortened to make a haysweep out of the chassis. Luckily the shortshaft and tube were in good shape and found a decent home. Rod

If any are bevel gear (ring and pinion, as opposed to worm driven) you can look around the seam where the two halves of the pumpkin come together for a stamped number. "736" indicates that there was a set of 5.14:1 gears in it at some point. I say "at some point", because I have a rear with that stamped on it, but someone swapped in a 6.6:1 gearset some time in the past. Same goes for the speedo gear. Both are good starting places, but by no means a guarantee. Luke
