Default Gav

Newbie question. How much adjustment should there be for GAV? I can only get about 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Whatever sounds best and has most power going uphill, nothing unusual about 1/2 to 3/4

Are you saying that you can only turn the knob 1/2 to 3/4 turn and then it jams? Or that engine only responds to that small amount of turns?
If the former, something is wrong.

Is the rod going down to the GAV straight inline with the GAV at the carburetor? If the frame is sagged, which is quite common, there can be a misalignment where the rod connects to the carburetor, causing it to bind.

It does not jam but that is all of the adjustment I have.

Something is not right. You should be able to turn and turn the knob freely, actually until you completely unscrew the GAV needle from the carb. Perhaps the shaft is not engaged with the flat on the needle. Pull back the steel sleeve and check to see if the shaft is engaged with the needle.

Take the rod off to eliminate that from the equation. Lift up on the sleeve that holds the rod, then move the rod to the side and let the sleeve and spring, and any washers, fall off the rod. You can just push the rod up to get it out of the way. Then try to rotate the GVA with your fingers. If you still have the same problem, remove the GAV from the carburetor. Do not force the treads or you may damage them. If there is a loop of wire around the bottom of the GAV housing, remove it. Try turning the GAV with it out of the carburetor. Do not re install the wire loop.

Be forewarned, the GAV hex is an odd size, 13/32" and will normally require a six point deep socket to remove without destroying the brass fitting. A 10 mm metric socket will fit.
The spring wire loop is designed to keep some tension on the needle so that it can't lose it's setting with vibration. Sometime the tension needs to be adjusted if too tight.

Thank You! That is exactly what happened, now I'm wondering how?

Is the steel sleeve the original correct one? or has someone replaced it with an oversized tube? the original tube should just fit over the GAV needle shaft... no way the shaft and the needle can come disengaged.
