Rear Spring spreader...reversed eyes
I'm starting a Huckster using an old speedster frame that I put together 12 or 14 years ago. I have Posie reversed eye spring and can't remember how I compressed it! Is removing the whole drive train the easiest way to address this problem? There is no engine or body.
Thanks in advance for your ideas. |

Re: Rear Spring spreader...reversed eyes
Denis, I have 4 pieces of ¼"x2" flatbar that is clamped on the topside & bottomside of the spring out by the eye on each end. In other words, a sandwich on the top and bottom that uses ¼" bolts to hold the sandwich together. The top plate actually slides over against the rolled eye, and directly below it, the plate makes a "cleat" for the spreader to latch on to.
If this doesn't make sense, maybe I can explain it differently?? / |

Re: Rear Spring spreader...reversed eyes
Sounds good to me Brent, does the top plate fit tight between the eye and end of the second leaf? I would think a good fit here would help keep things straight once you start jacking things.

Re: Rear Spring spreader...reversed eyes
Same as Brent but i used 4 pieces of 1/2" square tubing cut about 6" long. and sandwiched the spring with 5/16" bolts. Same outcome.

I first got the main leaf and put it through the shackle on one side of the diff, and then had my old man stand on the leaf and used another leaf on the top of the axle tube and he just stood on it until it was flattened enough to get the other shackle in. Then pulled the other leaf out, this was used because without it wassn't quite the right height. You'll understand if you try it without first. I basically stacked as many as i could of the smaller ones and clamped them tight with a screwdriver through them, and just laid the bigger ones onto the main leaf. I then placed the clamped pack with the screwdriver onto the main leaf + other longer leafs, and clamped them fairly tight and then removed the clamp on the original few leafs. After that i just had to keep swapping clamps until i had the whole pack clamped together. I then pulled the screwdriver and installed the original square topped bolt. |
