Default Dual side-post generator for '40, 12V?

The two brush generator in my '40 which I bought as a parts car is mated to a 12V regulator and had been "running when parked" 50 years ago. The electrics all are 12V on the rest of the car. Seems to be made up form a later generator with a two posts on side. What do I look for to check of the generator voltage? What current output can I expect at 12V from one of these? The generator looks like an authentic '40 except for the side-posts. Thanks: Fred A

I have a 12V updated 6V 33 generator, and it uses Ford Fifties Field coils.
And give 30A+.

Measure between the 2 posts on the side with an ohm meter.
If you have around 3 ohm it has 6v field coil if it´s around 6 ohm you have 12v field coil in it.

Great trick, as I understand it 12V is series and the 6V is fields parallel. I went out to the shed and measured a pile of them. In the '40 measured 8.2. One out of a '56+ at 7.8 Ohm. The other old ones were all very close to 3 Ohm. One all chrome that would have been great at 12V, Measured 3 Ohm. Just remembered another generator that is a 2 brush with a fan. That it has two side-posts which could be interesting on an earlier car. Thanks for the responses: Fred A

Hi Mr 42,

What year in the 50's please did you use, "I have a 12V updated 6V 33 generator, and it uses Ford Fifties Field coils"? do you have a part number?

Thanks,
Glenn

Any 12v ford generator with the same lenght housing can be a donor for fields.
There are a shorter up to 35A and a longer 40A housing if i remember correctly you want the short one.
Every fieldcoil setup is in series otherwise it would have been easy just rewiring...you need to change them out for higher resistance.
You can make a 6v generator put out 12v by just changing the regulator but it won´t last...why wouldn´t it last ??
The regulation we use is pulse regulation with the points opening and closing so we get the same issue as when running an ignition coil with to low resistance...points cant handle the increase in current and burn in the regulator...
