59A Flywheel Machining & Clutch refitting..
So recently removed flywheel from 59A engine for a clean up. As per advice on this site decided against any flywheel lightening.
They just removed enough for a good surface clean up along with balancing of flywheel and clutch cover. Initially flywheel had somebad dings and grooves etc vincity of clutch plate location so good to get rid of these. Clutch is a 10". At refitting and tightening up the 6 locating set bolts (17 to 20 ft/lb) noted that clutch cover does not contact flywheel surface. There is approx a 2mm gap at each areaat cover to flywheelat bolts. I believe the cover should pull down and be incontact with flywheel. Seek confirmation or advice here. Phil NZ |

Re: 59A Flywheel Machining & Clutch refitting..
The only thing I can think of is (might be wrong) that the bolts are now too long and are bottoming before pulling the pressure plate down. I think I'm right in saying the 59A has blind holes.
You might need to shorten the bolts or use a washer. also check how deep the counterbore is. Also are they the correct bolts with the right length of plain shank? Mart. |

Do you have the lock washers on the bolts?

I just had my flywheel resurfaced for my C59A, but I haven't yet picked it up from the machinist. I'm not sure if I understand you question though.

As Mart says but could be shoulders of bolts hitting threads in flywheel. Cheers

And Yes - the clutch should be firmly against the flywheel surface!!!!!

But fitted without washers. So could be shoulder coming up against the flywheel. Will recheck and get it as it should be. Important info being cover should make contact on flywheel. Many thanks as always for good info. Phil NZ |

Re: 59A Flywheel Machining & Clutch refitting..
Phil, take everything off and test fit a bolt into a hole. It should end up with less clearance than the combined thickness of the pressure plate and a lock washer.
The bolts may be correct but your flywheel might have been skimmed enough to make either the depth of the holes or the depth of the counterbore not deep enough. Mart. |

That is a very valid point. And will remove and check hole depth and adjust accordingly. Again appreciate your assistance. Phil NZ |

Re: 59A Flywheel Machining & Clutch refitting..
Its now all sorted. A washer took out the 2mm as without the washer shouder on bolt bottomed out giving the 2mm gap. All good and engine run up on test stand.
Next project to swap engine out of 46 Merc Coupe and put this one in. Phil NZ |

Re: 59A Flywheel Machining & Clutch refitting..
Phil, glad you found the culprit. I'm a little concerned that you had a 2mm gap and a washer took up that gap. Is the washer 3mm thick? You need to be absolutely sure the bolts are applying full clamping to the plate before bottoming.
Of course if the dimensions you were quoting were generalisations and not accurate measurements you might be ok. You might consider shortening the bolts a little if there is any sign they are still bottoming. Mart. |
