Re: Inner tubes
1977, heck, that's modern!
Old inner tubes are the best, but most of my old ones come with a dozen patches. |

Re: Inner tubes
That's the way tubes should be - not like the rubbish that was being pedalled a few years ago.

Re: Inner tubes
5 tubes, no patches, I'm the original buyer of the tubes.

Re: Inner tubes
The grandkids will love playing with them. I would not recommend driving on them.

Re: Inner tubes
I don't think the 40 years old inner tubes would be a problem to use if they were stored in a cool place not in the sun light. Sunlight is the enemy of rubber. Just don't drive real fast on them.

Re: Inner tubes
A while back I replaced a worn tire and the tube in the old tire was red rubber, had 4 patches on it, and no leaks whatsoever. That tube had been in the tire since the late 1981 when I bought the car. I have no idea how old the tube was and was told that the red rubber inner tubes were from the 1940's and earlier. Naturally, the new tube I put in the tire started leaking within a month and I regretted discarding the old red one!

Re: Inner tubes
Seems like all the new innertubes break at the seam.

Re: Inner tubes
Last summer I bought four new tubes. Three blew out before I got home, the last one blew sitting in the drive two hours later! What a bunch of junk. JB

Re: Inner tubes
I made the mistake a few years ago, and bought all new inner tubes when I also bought new Goodyear tires. The tires are wonderful, but every one of those tubes leaks about 2 lbs of air pressure a week....all five of them.

Re: Inner tubes
I believe the blue stripe on your tubes means they are Good Years, correct?

Re: Inner tubes
I have always been puzzled by the notion that tubes have seems. A seem would be visible on both sides of the material being joined. The inside of a tube is uniform all over. There are joins in the moulds which leave lines on the outside of the tube, sure but no seems in the tube. I suspect that if a tube fails along one of those joins, it might be to do with different cure rates across the join. I'm not an expert on this (seems neither were those who made those tubes) so take this FWIW.

Re: Inner tubes
The worst of those tubes from my experience came from EEC. I believe that to be because they were too much into recycling and wouldn't use virgin materials.
