I am new to Model A's. I just purchased a 1929 coupe that is grinding in second gear. I have an opportunity to purchase a rebuilt 30 tranney. Can some tell me if they are the same ? Many thanks Tom

Just curious and not trying to be rude but have you drove many Model A's? They are an unsyncronized trans and until you get used to it you will grind. I still grind gears down shifting and I've had mine for a few years. Try double clutching and just take your time trying to shift, it's a bit different. However, to the best of my knowledge the only differences in the trans is the tower for certain years and parking brake placement but I'm sure some else can give you a better answer.

When you say "grinding", are you talking about the sound it makes when you're in second, or the difficulty of getting it into second gear? As Mr. Meredith mentions, it takes finesse and patience to get a non-synchro Model A into second: shift up at about 10-12 mph, take your time, let the gears find their spot. Don't wind it up, but of you do, double or triple clutch it until things get coordinated inside.

And, are you talking about 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd ? Are you familiar with the term double-clutching ?

Thanks Guys for the pointers. No I am not familiar with model A's. I have had many other antiques but this is my first Model A. It grinds only in second gear. My thought was maybe some of the gear teeth for second gear were worn. As far a double clutching. When I was in college many moons ago I drove a large milk truck that I had to double clutch. if you guys think it will help I will try that approach.

Yes, clutch going into the gear and clutch coming out. Do it up and down. Also you can shift these cars at pretty slow speeds. No need to wind up the motor RPM's. Get her moving in first and then go right into second. Literally get it moving in first and then within 30 to 50 feet clutch in, pull it out of 1st into neutral, clutch out, clutch in, and slide her into second. Make deliberate shifts.

Tranny fluid, what are you using. "600W" is available from all the vendors.
Have to double clutch.
