Default Bail wire on radiator caps

What was the purpose for the bail wire on top of the 35 radiator caps. Thanks. Some fellow asked me today about my 35' s cap and I did not know

The purpose of the bail is to keep from burning your fingers.It does help with a hot raditor. Dave Collette

I thought it was to hang on something when removed. seems it would bend if you tried to turn it with the wire.
