28/29 Phaeton tom measurements needed
I have a new set of repo top irons and bows. I need to know the width of the irons at the top, so when I get the top fabric it will fit. I can vary the width by inserting the bows more or less.
Also the bow above the drivers head has an offset. Does the long side go up or down? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, James Lambert |

The above should read TOP measurements needed.
Sorry I have fat fingers. James Lambert |

Re: 28/29 Phaeton tom measurements needed
James: These are a set of original top irons repro wood bows. They are notched to fit at a certain width. For instance, the second bow from the front is 33" between the irons. Is this the measurement you are after? Also, The second bow is offset upwards. This allows a continuous roof curve. If you would like more photos, let me know. Also, I am NOT a Phaeton top expert. I'm just feeling my way through this same as you. First Phaeton for me.
If you would like the distance between all the top bows, let me know, but if you have the same wood bows as I do, then that distance is predetermined. |

Mike
My 28 is the same color as yours. If you would measure the between the second, third and forth bows just above the flat iron links I would appreciate it very much. Thanks, James |

Re: 28/29 Phaeton tom measurements needed
James: 53 3/4" for both across the flat iron links. Between the 2nd and 3rd bow, a section of the flat iron connecting link is curved in ward. I did not measure that. Just the straight part.
That's rose beige and seal brown, which is a 29 Phaeton color. My bride insisted on that color, even though it's wrong for the year. The 28 color chart did not impress her. I felt it was a small price to pay for peace at home! If you need any more info let me know. mike |

The top irons and bows make more sense now. I never noticed the curve in the bow above the drivers head. I bought a box of top bows and irons with no instructions. I bought a basket case car, so I have had a big jig saw puzzle. Thank you so much for your help. James Lambert |

Re: 28/29 Phaeton tom measurements needed
James,
I was in a similar position with regards to the bows and top irons. No idea what to do. Eventually I pieced together the info I needed. I mounted the top irons on my '28 Phaeton and used broom handles and cable ties (on the outside of the irons) to position the irons where they needed to be. Double checked that width with the upholstery kit I had and made some minor adjustments. When all appeared within tolerance (including the need to stretch the top) I measured the distance between the top irons (left and right) and then did some minor shaping of the woods to fit snugly. I did one at a time - checking the broom handles connecting the other irons to ensure there was no movement. After fixing the woods into the irons the next step was to have an upholsterer help with me the top. A huge sigh of relief from me when it fitted perfectly. John |

John
Thanks for the ideas. I think I will use Mike's measurements to get close and then fine tune with the fabric top as you suggested. Thanks again, James Lambert |
