Here's a thread on an oil bath filter that was modified to accommodate a large paper element. I can't imagine there would be much flow restriction from this modification.

I take those cheap ass filter and throw them away. Then i just use the top and bottom and buy a wire mesh sample kit from mccaster carr. I use the fine mesh. Oh and i use the wire off of the paper filter to hold it from being sucked in. It works great and looks great. They need to be cleaned periodically as well. I have a thread on the hamb "2x2 air cleaners" or something.

Where did you get the V8 ring? From some old filters?

Use two of the small ones with K&N filters. Also got rid of the shrouds and use tobacco can lids for the tops.
They work real well checking them with an A/F meter.

I read an article somewhere recently cautioning about the filters that you describe. The author said there are several filters that fit the housing (including the one that comes in the package), but do not flow enough for automotive use. A good parts store should be able to match up the size you need in a paper filter designed for an engine.

I'm running two of them on my '51 flathead 6 with 1902 Holleys. I've never noticed a problem with them, but I've never tried without them. I need to pull them off and take a trip down the road. I might have a real power house.

I have one of the filters, came with the car when I bought it. I'm going back to original filter. [36 Ford] If someone wants it, let me know. For all you chrome lovers, I have the chrome head, intake and fuel pump nut covers as well as a chrome sleeve for the generator. Oh, and a chrome oil breather cap. Buy it all, I'll make a package deal.
