Frame Welting
Can anyone advise the correct thickness, width and length of
ORIGINAL body-to-frame welting. A source for this welting would also be much appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: Frame Welting
The welting I used on my 2 model A's is 1/16" thick. I bought it from Bratton's or Bert's. I used Weldwood real contact cement (not the water based crap) to bond it to the frame. I used sharpened cast iron pipes (3 different sizes) and a block of wood to "punch" the holes for the body to frame bolts.

Re: Frame Welting
Harbor Freight has a nice, reasonably priced hole punch set. I used it on all my frame welting. Nice crisp round holes with no back side fray.
Lay the frame welting in place; secure it with good sticky tape; layout hole distances and centers; remove tape; place on wood block and PUNCH!

Re: Frame Welting
They also make the welting in a self adhesive version, solves all the issues of sticking it to the frame.

Re: Frame Welting
When I did my huckster, I had some advise to use duct tape for the welting. Whatever you do, do not use duct tape. Like mentioned above, get a good quality welting from one of the vendors.

Re: Frame Welting
Hi Larry:
Checked with Harbor Freight for the punch se. They have several types. Which one did you use that gave you the correct results? Thanks!

I met an old carpenter at Home Depot about a year ago who has only one eye because he did the precise same thing. Hammers face-to-face. As he described it, "That's when the head of the 'down'-side hammer exploded!" Exploded!!!!!! Major eye and wrist (!!!) surgery. Think it over: Safety goggles won't keep the shrapnel out of the rest of your face, or your hands, or your helpers... So if you just can't resist doing it this way, and I know how easy it sounds, you should probably wear a welder's mask, and the gloves, and do it by yourself... Sorry to be a safety drudge, but......
