Question Water Pump Rebuild Time

The water pump on Dad's Coupe is leaking and I'm pretty sure its beyond the band-aid stage. It's time for a rebuild and I'd like to know who offers the best kit. Should we go with the leakless version or are they not all they are cracked up to be?

No question in my mind. Go with the leakless. I have had one on my roadster for 12 years and never a leak! Pretty simple to install and to take care of. All those years of packing and grease and tightening are just memories now.

I like Brattons kit with a stainless steel shaft and the rear bushing with the O ring. Also, before I install it on a car I fill the grease fitting areas with waterproof grease. Then one more shot of waterproof grease a year or more later.

I've never delt with Bratton's or Mac's (I do have a Mac's catalog), I've always bought from Sacramento Vintage but they are out of stock on the leakless kits. Are the Bratton's and Mac's kits the same? Any chance you have the exact part number for the kit you are recommending?

For about $50 in parts, including the bushing with a seal you can have a very dependable WP.The packing may require a slight tightening every 5,000 miles or so & a slight amount of grease every 500 miles but whats wrong with that? I think that, along with double clutching & the regular maintaining of the car are part of the model "A" experience. If you want to be maintainance free as possible ,then any modern car would suit you fine. My recommendation is James Rupert in Bakersfield. He has been rebuilding and selling Model A water pumps for years. They are leakless, have stainless shafts machined to eliminate end play, double ball bearings in the front, and you never have to grease them. He advertises in the Restorer. Three year warranty. He also makes an extreme duty pump with a five year warranty. 800-561-8449.

I'll run all these ideas by Dad, see what he wants to do and report back.

I have a leaks less and less pump, it is stock, in the first 5 years it needed frequent adjustments, now 25 years later the adjustments are rare, no drips for the last few years, I made it with used parts leftover from a leakless conversion, the pump before that was a stainless shaft pump, it only lasted 5 years before the shaft wear at the front bearing was too much, the leakless pump that my parts came from has been replaced 2 times for leaking.

Put a James Rupert pump in and forget it. Use his Extreem Duty pump if you run an alternator.
