You can read all day on that stuff. I used sodium silicate (the main ingredient) once years ago without any joy. I did use ground ginger just like at the grocery store and stopped a small leak in heater core within 30 mins though!

Egg white and tobacco is what is 'traditionally' used - by old codgers over 80 years old.

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
Bar's Leak is a good product. However, if it's a head gasket leak it might be OK. If it's a blown head gasket save your money and put it towards a new gasket.

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
The stuff I used , and it worked..fixed a bad leak which was a hydraulic lock with so much water leaking, needed the coolant flushed out, then the snake oil added, run for a bit , then flushed out and coolant re added.
Dunno what's in straight coolant vs glycol, but to be able to add it and leave it in permanently sounds good to me. A $15 try is worth a shot. |

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
The stuff I referenced is not plain old bars leak radiator sealer, it's a relatively new HEAD GASKET sealer. Sells for around $30 - $35.

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
I normally consider stuff like this to only be a temporary repair, but was very much surprised when Subaru used it as a permanent repair on a head gasket problem they had on over a half million cars.... for me it held up for over 5 years (sold the car).

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
ive had some stop leak stuff in my s10 for years due to a leaky only in the winter freeze plug. i think it finally crusted over enough it doesnt leak anymore, took a few years though...
usually those miracles in a jug are a temp fix or problem reducer ( slows coolant leak anyways) if its headgasket leaking id just pull the head and see why. I do use that coppercoat stuff on all gaskets to ensure the new gasket doesnt leak.

GM used the ground ginger for years. I believe it was a relabeled Barr's Stop Leak tablets.

If you are willing to spend 30 to 35, I'd go a little more buy K Seal. I spent a hour in an auto parts place reading the details of a myriad of seal 'stuff'..claims. Someone on the early V8 gave me reason to look at k seal. At roughly $40, I read where you do not have to jump throw hoops and drain this and clean that/whatever. Best part was that it is happy with any coolant and can be left in system with existing coolant. The stuff worked ! I had an old worn water pump that leaked around shaft. I used it thinking that it only had to pump water..not seal and be perfect. k seal even sealed up the leaking water pump..added bonus, eh Check out my recent past thread regarding block cracks...intake/exhaust. I thought that I had wasted a lot of $, on an engine block that a 'builder' had become over zealous in his valve pocket porting..even after being warned against such behavior. k seal is more expensive, but I figured if it works..how much $ is too much to pay |

Re: Bars leaks head gasket sealer
I was told to use Bars Leak Head Gasket Sealer following the installation of my last head gasket. I did and its tight and I have no known blockages in the radiator. It has worked for ten thousand miles. I do wonder following periodic coolant changes if I should add new Bars. I have not.
