Antique Insurance a little off Topic

I used State Farm one time, I tried them for motorcycle insurance. As a result, I'll never use State Farm again for anything ever. Worst claim settlement experience imaginable. They require you to hire lawyers for everything, and the lawyers even get pissed at their tactics. Coverage is useless if you can't get paid.

I have Condon & Skelly, have had them for years. Never had a claim so I have no idea how good (or bad) they may be.

Anyone care to comment?

I’ve been with Hagerty since 2010 had couple small claims were paid in full with no problem I had other companies before and had some issues very glad i hooked up with Hagerty

I hate to see anyone having problems with any type of insurance. It is not what we payed for. I have State Farm and have never had an issue them. In fact a couple years ago the avatar car ate itself with the ring and pinion while I was about a hundred miles away. I had it put on a wrecker flatbed and hauled home for about $500. Went down to my agent and had a check for the full amount in about 20 minutes.

That's nearly what I'd experienced. StateFarm said "no way" to the seat belt retractors as I had been hit in the back. They said they wouldn't go off with that type of collision. Um, as hard as I was hit, they in fact did go off.
My adjuster / friend said that's the typical MO for StateFarm… deny, deny, deny.
They did pay up finally and paid for all OEM parts.

Called Hagarty, and asked about my 35 project, they will insure it for agreed upon amount.
Not running yet, as is. And I can update as I go. Reasonable price too.

I've had Hagerty for over 20 years; just switched the coverage to my '40 as it's on the road now. One quick phone call, they accepted my value no questions asked and I had the new evidence of insurance via e-mail within 10 minutes... no hassles at all.

The idea with any antique car insurance is they send pictures out to an underwriter and won't insure a $500 car for $5,000. This will be the same for any insurance company. I had an unrestored 41 woodie without any wood, looked like hell. They would insure it for what I paid. They would up the amount by what I spent on it if I showed them receipts. IMHO you are way better off with any antique car insurance than standard insurance unless you drive it every day. With standard insurance the car gets depreciated for milage etc.

I own a 2004 Toyota MR2 which is a semi collector car. Book value for the car is around $5k as a used car. Paid $11.5k for the car with 7k miles in 16 years in like new condition. I drive it every day so can't get collector car insurance on it as they won't insure a daily driver. So I have liability only figuring paying $1000/year for collision would not be worth only getting $4k if totaled.

Also not a good idea to drive your collector car to the grocery store or work as the insurance is for pleasure driving only. If you don't follow the insurance restrictions you can end up not getting paid for an accident.

I have had Grundy for about 30 years. I Had three Major claims without any issues. Imagine explaining to the agent how you backed into your Wifes' Buick.

Just some general musings...
I worked in the insurance business as a damage appraiser for American Family.
Heard and saw lots of crap out of State Farm and Farmers as far as settling claims.
Someone mentioned being involved in an incident where their door was backed into and their insurance paid (although not at fault) and then collected from the insurance company of the other party- that’s called subrogation. It usually results in your insurance rates going UP. If you somehow “escaped” consider yourself fortunate.
I’ve got Condon Skelley for classic car insurance. No claims though, so I can’t describe their performance. CS is a broker, some of their carriers are Liberty Mutual, Wausau, etc. Like aviation insurance, the policies are very specifically written for Condon Skelley and not generally the typical underwriting you find under Liberty Mutual, etc.

Hi; I had Safeco for 20+ yrs and my collector cars also and then I turned 70, and they went ballistic, with huge unreasonable increases. Dropped them for everything!! Newc

All insurance companies are very good at receiving your payment. I might guess they all get a AAA rating for that.

I've had Grundy for years. Had two cars('40 Fords) damaged in the last big earthquake. Grundy sent out an adjuster and they covered all the damages. Their rates are way less than the big companies like State Farm.

Same here. Got my magazine Tuesday had a good article on Mustangs.

Hagerty is hard to beat. Grundy is good too they tell me. I never heard of anyone having trouble with State Farm on antique cars, this is a first. Until recently.

State Farm is out of Bloomington, Illinois. I know a young guy that got a job down there at the home office about 12-13 years ago when he got out of college.

He just quit them last winter and moved his family back to the Quad Cities area. I asked him 'why' and he said 'Because they are not the company they used to be, the work place is toxic they treat everybody like crap now adays. They called us into a room. 10 of us, and said 8 of you will no longer be employed here in 90 days and we haven't decided who were going to cut yet, so show us what you're made of.' Steve told me they could shove their company he wasn't working under those conditions.

My point is, sounds like a good company going bad under poor management, probably why they treated yo that way on your latest antique car.

Sounds like they are chasing profits over people like so many companies do when they get to big.

I have Condon & Skelly for 40 years. They insure all my Junkers for whatever I tell them. They use to what how many miles I drive them. But not any more. I never did check prices any place else. Never had a claim so I don't know what to expect from them. I was rear ended in my 57 Chevy in 1987. The Chevy was totaled. State Farm insurance paid me 21,409 for my Chevy. They did not give me a hard time. That what I ask them for.
