Default Canopy just too noisy. Help required please

the canopy on my 28 pickup flaps noisily particularly when an oncoming truck passes. It is tight and cushioned where the bow bend. It cannot be pulled any tighter. I can lift it at the bows less than half of one inch.

Does anyone have a simple answer or suggestion please.

Well, so that we are clear on things before advice starts flowing, are we speaking on the top on an open-cab pick-up? Does it have the correct non-folding irons & bows, -or is it an aftermarket/home-made set?? Does the top have the correct padding installed??? What material is being used for the cover????

To a certain extent, that is just how they were originally. They were a cheap option for someone who needed a haulage vehicle. Today they are popular because of the open air, convertible-appearing factor, -but that is not how they were perceived when new. They were noisy and drafty back in the day.

Thankyou Brent.

It was more than 20 years ago since I had this vehicle rebuilt so some things I don’t recall. Do see the last line of my signature. The bows look like new and if I had purchased them it would have been from Snyders. I know that doesn’t answer your question. They are not manufactured to fold.
The material is vinyl and yes it does have padding installed, front to rear, where the bows bend. Neither the vinyl or bows are loose. All has been well made.
The noise and flapping made in windy weather and by big oncoming vehicles distract from the pleasure of driving it. Gary.

The problem you mentioned is many times worse in a tourer. The longer hood makes tightening more difficult. Mine snaps like a cracking whip sometimes but I live with it. These are not limosines!

Mate, I drove our home made open cab all over Australia for years, some times when trucks or road trains passed we thought the top would take off,
After many years ,while driving back from Winton in the middle of the mining boom and truck after truck went passed, I decided to buy the parts to change it to a closed cab,I was the green ccpu parked next to you outside the hall at Murray Bridge,Best thing I ever did ,WAY better to travel in ,not a cheap option though.
On our way home from the Rally we did two days driving in the pouring rain ,not one drop came inside,

A good set of earmuffs work wonders! When I was a kid I drove my A home from an Iron Butterfly rock concert. No earmuffs but it never ran quieter!

hi Laurie. The noise is a detraction from driving it as you found out. I went to the internet and found one made for rods. It had a different roof and side profile and looked most unattractive. Fibreglass would be the way to go.
How about sending me some photographs of yours

with thanks, gary

Just stick some foam rubber over the top bows, and that should snug the fabric enough to not flap.

not any more hopefully. I had a piece of 3 ply placed under the vinyl between the windscreen and first bow. a short drive and it seemed to have been rectified. If it still flaps I'll adhere the vinyl to the ply with contact cement.
