You can use the Caswell home plating kit called "COPY-CAD" or you can send the parts out for real cad plating. Copy-Cad does a pretty good job. There are spray paints, but I don't even consider them.

Re: How to get "cadmium" finish on bolts etc??
I'm lucky and have a very affordable cad plating buisness just down the street from me (I'm talking like $50 for all the cad on the whole A) if you were just looking for a easy way of doing it, Eastwood also sells a cad looking spray paint that in my experience works really well. If you end up getting the real plating, I like to spray each peice with a satin clear spray paint to protect the cad from turning dark. Eastwood sells a really nice satin clear spray paint as well.

I'm pleased with the Caswell copycad system. The instruction book takes you through every step and you'll discover variations in finish as you experiment with different metal preperation, current & emursion times. Time consuming indeed...but fun!
Below, each pic shows the "dusty" untouched look...as it exits the tank. Further experimenting with scrubby pads, oily rags or rubbing compounds will change that look. *the LAST pic compares <CopyCad on left...true Cadmium on right> |

If you can still get DULL aluminum spray cans, I used it to "FAKE" cad plating on brake calipers on a '59 Jaguar Mark 9. I then whisked over it with satin clear. I also "faked" the cad plating in the ash tray receptacles. The car won FIRST place in a MAJOR show in Napa, Ca. Bill W.

Zincing looks like Cad. plating and will last a darn sight longer.

All the zinc I've seen here has a strong blue tone and looks like the junk you get from the hardware store. I can't live with that.

Re: How to get "cadmium" finish on bolts etc??
Zinc here is available in white, blue and a light cream. The white looks identical to a cad. finish and is cheap. A shoe box lot of parts costs around $10.00 NZD or $8.10 USD approx. The heating of the parts in the zincing process does not appear to effect the strength of the parts in any way. I am always very careful of what parts are zinced. No steering parts what so ever.

I have used the East wood spray, and have excellent results. You have to be careful to prevent runs. Spray a lite coat, let it flash, then a final coat. Works and lasts.
