Picture of 29 in Commercial Gray...
An introduction, a thank you, & a request...
I have spent the better part of this year on this forum several times a week, absorbing as much knowledge as possible from all of you, gathering pictures, taking notes, also met a few great folks along the way. You guys are an incredible group, with a wealth of knowledge....I thank you all! I've got the beginnings of a 29 pickup, all original sheet metal & very minor surface rust, many parts were stripped and primed back in the late 60's. I'll need to do a small amount of welding on a few cracks and extra holes in the fenders, but otherwise I'm thankful to be starting off with some solid patch free steel. Working on a set of doors as I write this, and have a running gear available when the time comes. The frame I have is from July 29, but without holes for rear of cab.... I've done as much as I can to verify what I believe to be is a 29 cab, i.e., rear view mirror holes mid-a pillar etc., and the cross member stamping is SFAA 4xx which is a question for another post... So, here's what I'm looking for..... I've seen these trucks, both pickups an AA's in all the original Commercial colors, Black, Gunmetal Blue, L'anse Green (Dark), as much as I like the Rock Moss Green on these trucks, there are plenty of those out there, I keep thinking mine should the other color they came with! All I really would like is to put this truck back on the road once again so it can be driven and enjoyed long past its 100th birthday....in an original color! I've seen this requested in the past, but with no reply picture of a 28 in Commercial Gray, or 29 in Commercial Drab Does anyone have an example in either of these colors? P.S. - If someone does come up with some good pictures, shouldn't they belong on the Commercial Vehicles thread....? |

Re: Picture of 29 in Commercial Gray...
This is the only commercial drab '29 I've ever found on the web:
http://volocars.com/1929-ford-model-....BXPPBBB6.dpbs I've considered painting my '29 CCPU that color, but so far have chosen to leave it with what's left of its original black. |

Re: Picture of 29 in Commercial Gray...
M682 Commercial Gray for commercial vehicles was obsoleted in Aug. 1928. It is my belief that this color was a dark green. The new color (starting Aug. 1928 was M680 Gun Metal Blue (see attached service letter). Rock Moss Green was introduced in January 1929 per that month's Service Bulletin. However, the above does not agree with the current JS which lists Rock Moss Green as a 1928 color. I have found no Ford documentation supporting Rock Moss Green as a color for 1928.
Sales advertisement for early 1928 indicate the cab and cargo body for AA's was "dark green". And, I believe that green was named Commercial Gray. For 1929, Commercial Gray is not a choice per the JS.

Re: Picture of 29 in Commercial Gray...
Neil's comments would lend credence to my March 1929 truck - which I always wondered about the color.
The former owner had spray painted it a metallic green similar to Rock Moss Green - but the color underneath was quite a bit darker. And not what I would consider rock moss green. No doubt a fair number of bodies were made as parts in 1928, and carried over to 1929. My truck shows several features of an earlier AR type vehicle (it's not AR though) including the type H headlights, powerhouse generator. Trucks are where Henry tended to use up "obsoleted" parts though. Joe K

I have also considered black, and it sure would have helped to have some original paint left to match, all my parts were worked on and primed years ago! These other pics are from an add here on the Barn, looks like a much lighter grey to me. I know its hard to determine from photos... Any thoughts? |

Thanks for the clarification, my post heading was a typo. While I would like to see the 28 Grey, I would really like to see any example of Commercial Drab on an A to use as a reference. Mike |

Re: Picture of 29 in Commercial Drab...
Would this be another example of French Gray?
This truck sold on eBay a few days ago, add says original, never taken apart.... It most definitely had some modifications done to that interior, but real question I have is the color? Still looking for a good example of Commercial Drab for a reference |
