Thermostat help for the 59A motor
Good morning all on the forum.
I have done a lot of reading and learning, but this is my first time posting. I hope this is in the proper place to ask this question. I have been working on restoring a 1940 Ford deluxe with an original 59A 85hp motor. The motor has been rebuilt and is currently in the frame. I am planning on installing 180 degree stats in the heads, but, I am not totally comfortable with the current design thermostats that are available through the aftermarket. (I don't like the reduced flow rates). My plan was to try and locate two NOS Dole butterfly style stats to use in the engine, but no matter how hard I try I can't seem to find an application guide that would give me a working part number for the correct Dole stat that can be used in the 59A. (these stats sit in the neck centered on the head and are held in place by the upper hose) Would it be possible for anyone out there to maybe offer some information to help me with a part number for the correct Dole stat. Could it possibly be a Dole DV-7. Any help with this will truly be appreciated. Thank you all in advance. Vince |

Re: Thermostat help for the 59A motor
Just to add info: The 59A is original but not to the 1940 models. A replacement block was started into production during the war in late 1944 (41A design) which was a 221 CID 85 HP replacement for the 81A type engine for the prewar cars. They had the same "59" prefix cast in the rear bell as the 239 CID 100 HP engine manufactured in 1945 as the war department eased restrictions on manufacturers so that civilians could get replacement parts and trucks for agricultural & manufacturing support.
For the purposes of thermostat usage, they would be the same part for prewar 24 stud motors and immediate post war motors through 1948 to include all the 59 series. Welcome into the Barn. |

I do apologize and stand corrected. This is the original 81A motor 24 stud, to the car. all engine and frame numbers matching. Ive been having a bit of a tough few days, (very frustrating) when I sat down this morning and decided to post for some additional help. Thank you for the welcome and the correction. Sent a PM to barnfind for his t-stats. |

These are the Robertshaw 330-180 type modified to fit in the upper hose near the radiator so they don't move. They have preflow holes so engine coolant flows to allow them to warm up. I live in SW Florida and use them in several old Fords. They have large flow openings so the water in not restricted. With Skips high flow pumps my cars run between 178 and 182 when it's over 95 degrees outside. G.M.
