I'm preparing to install T5 5-speeds on two of my 8BA Flatheads to be used in F1 pickups. I can use the short pickup bellhousing and an adapter made by Speedy Bill (RIP), or Offenhauser. Another choice would be to use the Hogshead adapter from a large truck and an adapter.
My questions are:
Are there different Hogsheads?
If so, how do i tell the difference?
Who still makes the hogshead adapter to T5?
Would a hogshead config. be better than the Speedy Bill or Offy config?

A Hogshead is the adapter that Ford used on the later 1940s trucks between the block and the 4-speed. To use a Hogshead on a 1949 and later engine you also need an adapter between the block and the Hogshead like the one shown in the last attachment.

Using a Hogshead to adapt a T5 is a different approach that uses a flat plate adapter as opposed to the bellhousing style of adapters. (last figure of hogshead is from VanPelt).

Something to consider: I seem to remember that some of the aluminum adapters have clearance issues when using a 10 inch Long style pressure plate. Perhaps a Borg and Beck will solve the problem, or stick to a nine inch PP. The Hogshead should not have the same problem. Like I said this is something I recall from years ago so you should verify, or perhaps others on here will confirm or dispute this info.

I think there are at least two different thickness hogsheads. I have had some and one was deeper than the other. I hope someone will post the good depth for ID.

That is true, only the 2 3/4 inch will work as a T5 (or other later) transmission adapter. The measurement is on the attached figure in #3 above. The thicker one is Much thicker.

Does VanPelt sell the hogshead and/or the adapter? I didn't see either on their website. I have plenty of the short bellhousings and starter plates. Thanks again.,...jack

The Hogshead is an original factory item and I have never seen any supplier have them for sell. They sell for around $100 to $150 on ebay. There is normally one on there every week or so. I currently have 4 I have picked up on ebay.

Edit: just checked and don't see any at the moment, you can search under flathead transmission adapter, flathead truck transmission adapter, hogshead, F1 transmsission adapter, etc.

Do you prefer the hogshead method over the Speedy Bill/Offenhauser method?

I do, but I wanted to do it all myself and made my own adapter plate and use a Ford pattern transmission. It would be easier to use the purchased setups, especially if you are using a Chevy pattern T5. Check out Cornhuskers they are really good guys.

I like the old hogshead from about 40-52 big truck 4 speed granny low trans, to put the T5 trans in 48 and older car, because it has the thro out shaft and fork for the big bearing. I've bought the adapter from Dwight Bond, he makes it for the T5 and the Ford T5. Someone on here has his Tel. no.

Just as an asside, If you have a flywheel for a 10" B&B cover, you can run a 57 Chevy, 56 Dodge and others cover. The fingers for the throwout bearing are steel and can be bent in to fit the chevy throwout bearing.

I would also like any information on Bond, email corresponded with him a while back and had the impression that he was no longer selling the flat plate adapters then.

If they do I'd like to see a reference to them, all I have seen from Wilcap are the bellhousing style.
