'51 Ford Disc Brake Conversion
New member Pete here. Just acquired nice '51 Vicky & would like to know best way to install front disc brakes. Most "kits" I've seen don't address whether master cylinder needs to be replaced. Please advise. Pete Henningsen, Milford, CT

Re: '51 Ford Disc Brake Conversion
Might want to post that question on the HAMB as well.
Update: This is poorly written, the HAMB guidelines specify a cut-off time frame. I shouldn't have suggested a post outside that guideline. However there are topics that get covered that are outside the guideline timeframe. A suggestion to search the HAMB would have been better. Last edited by JSeery; 04-30-2018 at 06:39 AM. |

Also see Shoebox-Central's website. Chris has a wealth of knowledge for what you need.

Re: '51 Ford Disc Brake Conversion
I've got the JAMCO disc brake conversion. Easy install and works almost like power brakes. I'm still using the original master cylinder under the floor ( know, everyone is going to say that's not a good thing) but, I've had no trouble with it for at least 15 years. All you have to do is remove the residual valve from the rear of the MC and your good to go. No proportioning valve needed. I also run DOT 5 brake fluid. Do yourself a favor and replace all brake lines.

Re: '51 Ford Disc Brake Conversion
flathead4rd, Talked w/Mark @ ECI (860) 872-7046) here in CT. They have kit for $450 but of course he recommended dual power MC but agreed that "disabling" the residual valve in MC would work but I would still need a 2lb valve for front & 10lb valve for rear. Did you actually remove residual valve or disable it & did you have to add any other valving? If it's not too much trouble I'd appreciate a call (203) 804-3459 to discuss.
Thanks, Pete |

Re: '51 Ford Disc Brake Conversion
I used ECI brakes on my 52 mercury and power master from Jamco bolted right in and boy does it stop now! Lou
