Question Will a 33-34 windsheild crank fit a 35-36 car?

I found what I think is a 33-34 windshield crank, will it fit my 36? What is the difference?

Your windshield crank is a '35 by looks of the handle and should work on your '36.The 33-34 has a square shank for the handle.35-36 are splined.

Your crank is for a 35-36. I'm looking for one. Wanna sell it? (If it works properly, that is) PM me. Thanks. Lawson.

I snagged this replacement off of ebay for $125! but it popped up so quick I didn't want to loose it, the one I took out must have some missing teeth on the gear (is it the center one that strips or outer gears?) it worked but has a "dead spot" where you had to help it. I also bought another off of ebay today that also popped up , the mechanism looks the same but the attachment to the windows is at two points instead of in the center (maybe ford truck?), I picked this one up for $50 and bought it for parts in hope of making another good one out of two.

This exact same topic just came up on a 35-40 ford hot rod group on facebook too and I have been researching replacements, the Bob repops seems to be long gone and never to return? I found the prints that was sent to the patent office too

Question: what type of grease does everyone recommend for the gears, I "kroiled" it up real good but I was thinking of some chassis grease maybe or white silicone, thoughts?

Didn't plan to drop the dash on my 36 this morning but it is not really that hard to do, so the swap-out was not too bad, plus did some house cleaning while I was in there too

(note the mud dauber nest! )

The windshield regulators went to two attachment points on the windshield frame in 1937. The handle on the 37 and 38 does not mount the same way as the 35/6 regulator handle. The 39 also had two attachment points to the windshield frame, but it is different from the 37 and 38, having more of a knob than a handle and that nob being located on top of the dash rail, not the front of the dash rail.

A welder and file and the missing or damaged teeth can be repaired. Dave/Green Bay

Todd, like me, you're probably going to have a huge collection of those windshield crank out/in mechanisms before you know it 😀
There was a guy in Massachusetts who rebuilt these many years ago. I think he charged about ~ $100.00. Then he passed away, and I thought Joe's Antique Auto Parts picked up his repair business. Then maybe 5 or so years ago Bob Drake came out with his repro version which I thought was quite nice and worked well. I wound up buying 3 of his when they were on sale at $75.00 each. Have one in my '35 fordor Avatar, and the other two will be used in my coupes.
The weakness in this crank mechanism is the gear teeth stripping, probably caused when folks insisted on trying to crank the windshield open while the vehicle was moving forward at relatively high speed. The wind force on that flat windshield is great enough to strip those gears unless you helped it along some from inside the vehicle.

I have to say I was amazed when the replacement arrived before I had the old one out as to how small these are in comparison to the large wind load of the glass IMHO one on each end would have been the ticket but I know that would have been really complicated...and more costly.

So back to my question above;
What grease, if any, are you all using on these windshield cranks?
