temporary gas tank solutions...
well ive fianlly gotten the engine put back together after checking all the clearances and replacing the broken and worn bits have run it around a bit as a rolling chassis but have yet to get a suitable gas tank that wont leak from the connector point on the tank ( not the real tank just a homemade 1/2 gallon run it in the shop type of thing). anyone have a sure fire set-up you can share?
Thanks in advance Mike

Perhaps you can get an old lawnmower tank form a mower repair shop.

Re: temporary gas tank solutions...
I use a 1 gallon mineral spirts can. Small pin prick in the screw-on cap. Punch hole in bottom of can, flare the 1/4" copper tube, feed it down from the inside and then soft solder on the bottom of the can. This is also what we will use when we fire up the 1920 Seagrave fire truck next month.

This is my setup. I used a polypropelene bottle laying around and threaded a male coupling into a drilled hole with permatex. Bob nj |

Re: temporary gas tank solutions...
You can make a fairly strong can connector thus: Punch a hole in the buttom of a thinner can with a tapered punch...this leaves a hole with tapered walls, and you can use the punch to work hole to proper diameter to accept a 1/8 pipe thread tap OR just thread in a 1/8 pipe hose nipple...available in fitting cabinet at Home Depot, car, or hardware store.
Tin your fitting with solder, tin the hole, which should be easy assuming a nice shiny new can. Thread together, heat with propane torch, flow in a bit more solder. This is pretty durable, and stronger than just a piece of tubing soldered in so you end up with a permanent tank for this sort of thing. |

Re: temporary gas tank solutions...
What about a small portable gas tank designed for use with boating outboard motors? You could graft a flared fitting to the hose and even have a primer bulb.
