Re: Best Towing Vehicle
My opinion is that it doesn't matter with the reliability of vehicles these days which one you buy, as long as its towing capacity is legal and safe. I would also trend towards a turbo diesel for pulling power, economy and low maintenance.

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
bigger is better when towing . no matter the brand , its the payload that you are protecting . i would go 3/4 ton or bigger . just my opinion ...............

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
I have been very satisfied with our 2004 GMC Yukon SUV. It has the 5.3 liter engine and the trailer tow package. Without towing, it gets 19 MPG on the highway, 15 mpg around town . We tow an enclosed 18' long, 9' tall car hauling trailer. We often haul our 4,000# Stanley steamer and on the highway, we easily get over 10 mpg loaded. We easily climb the Cascade and the Rocky mountains. We use the Yukon as a daily driver, so the Yukon never sits idle. We bought it new and now have 100 K miles on it. The Yukon needed a new water pump at 35,000 miles and besides tires, that is the only repair needed thus far. I would buy another one for a tow vehicle.

Why buy a fuel guzzling ford F 250 that most of the parts are made in other country's any way to Pull an 80 year old ford that was 100% American made? They don't make ford's like they use to Along with most other things of today. My 2009 Toyota Tacoma Pulls my "A" any where I wan't to tow it, Plus it makes a great daily driver and gets a lot better gas milage then my 2007 Chevy. PU truck, [5.7] 350 cid eng. But, If you plan on pulling your "A" 6-8 mo's out of the year and money is no problem...Then get the ford F 250. |

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
My wife drives a 2006 Saturn Vue which is the only GM to ever have a 250HP 3.5L Honda engine and 5 speed auto transmission. Its a very weird vehicle which was part of the reason I bought it. A GM thats powered by Honda??? It came this way right from the factory.
The Honda engine and trans were both engineered AND built in Ohio. I believe a lot of the GM parts were from Mexico. I bet a lot of new Ford parts are also made in other countries. Don't judge something by the brand stamped on the front. Go out and test drive some trucks, its free and often fun! Test drive a Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan whatever catches your eye. I think this is the only way you are going to find exactly what YOU want. btw Louis, as far as I know GM stopped making the 350 in 1998 or 1999. How does your 2007 truck have a 350? The only options should be 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L. Last edited by MrTube; 06-29-2011 at 04:27 PM. |

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
Well. I will stick with FORD TRUCKS ! For the past 11 years i have driven 5 Ford trucks for work and towing . 2- F350 pickup diesel , F-550 dump truck diesel [oil pans rot out on 2000-2001] HI-Q 450 gas , 1995 Bronco . Best truck in snow ! And plowing ! The Toyota and Nissan pickups [SUCK] when it comes to pushing snow ! [FACT] i had to pull a good number of them off a snow bank. All have over 100,000 miles on them to 275,000. so where ever the parts come from FORD puts a GREAT TRUCK TOGETHER! My Ford was made in Kentucky. And also remember this,, GM took a lg. bailout from the tax payers [us or some of us] and then is sending $500,000 million to MEXICO to build engines at a new plant... Next time let MEXICO front the money!!!!

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
Just purchased a 2011 F150 Ecoboost 3.5L with 2 turbos.. Full sized, 4 door, all the bells and whistles and have pulled trailers and carried loads of gravel..
Getting 22-24 MPG unloaded, and it can pull over 11K pounds, what more do we need? I am absolutely thrilled with the truck, and have driven Dodge Diesels as well as HD Chevys.. - Dave (not a paid Ford Spokesperson) in Boise |

MrTube, You are right, I was thinking of the 1994 with the 350 that I traded in on it. I apologize for my mistake, Some times my fingers out run what's left of my brain. |

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
My 2003 Expedition still pulls fine. It is geared for cruise so it does kick down on hills.
I spoke with an independent mechanic about big trucks "under the skin" and long term. His opinion is that the Big 3 still have an advantage because they are built tougher from the ground up, the companies relied on these truck's high profitability in the good times before 2007, and hence plowed A LOT of money back into R&D (Allison granny's, Eco-Boost, etc). These trucks are as ubiquitous around the world as the Toyota Hilux is, hence the need to build the strongest trucks to maintain their sales advantage in 2nd and 3rd world markets. He also pointed up the choice of RV makers to use the F Series because of the boxed frame girders. Until the late 80's the clear choice was the Dodge frame, but Ford went after the market and outdesigned the Ram at the frame/foundation engineering level to win the market for these vehicles. An thorough and well understood explanation from a man with no dog in the fight except to look at it from an engineering/mechanical perspective.

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
I had a smaller 99 sr5 toyota that i towed a two axle trailer with. Scary as the 2 axle flatbed trailer pushed it around. My 06 f150 doesn't have that problem.
It is apples and oranges as the trucks are very different. Smaller truck with a v6. It was fast little bugger with good gas mileage. But not up to the job of a large trailer let alone with cargo. Currently I own a 06 ford v8 5.7 with a tow package and it has great power. Just did a 2400 mile trip in 50 hours with 3000lbs in tow. No problems. My brother has a vtech chevy and I was very impressed with the mileage, up to 27-30 highway. It is a full size club cab. Runs on 4 cylinders till you drop the hammer then it goes to 8 and I do mean it goes. I believe the new fords are similar in technology. I'll always buy an american truck till it isn't affordable or it's a complete screw job. Even if the parts are made overseas, it's still made here. Compare it to apple computers, the big check stays here. There is good trucks being made in america. Bigger is better as mentioned and diesel is a good option. Easier to convert to veggie if you really want to save. But that is a whole different question. |

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
I have my first Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer EL and I can put a full sheet of 4 x 8 foot plywood in it and DONT have to remove any seats and the tailgate fully closes. In fact about 2 dozen sheets of plywood.
Cant do that in a GM product without removing 3rd row of seats--heavy and cumbersome...been there done that..wont do it again. The Expy 3rd row seats electrically fold down flat. And it rides like a dream and gets about 18 MPG at 65 mph. I tow a 3500 pound Bayliner w/ I/O and trailer and its like it isnt even there. Dennis L Oberer Green Bay WI |

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
Mr.Tube,,,"NO" I don't use a Toyota Tundra truck to snow plow... They are to light in front and the plow rides over the snow bank. Then the truck gets stuck. not enough power to pull out of it.Get the tow rope out and pull them out. What i am saying is the snow gets caught between the plow and front bumper and raise the truck. Most south of the border guys buy them because they don't know any better!!!

Re: Best Towing Vehicle
Keep it Ford, when hauling a Ford. Keep it in North America, as much as possible.
