Special coupe questions
When installing the trim which goes around the coupe between the top and the lower deck area, did ford use any type of sealant to prevent water from getting under neath and damaging wood or sheet metal, such as caulk or mastic?
And secondly hmmm guess I forgot the second question!! |

Re: Special coupe questions
Vern,
I don't know what Ford did originally. When I did my Special, I put a dab of sealant on each nail head holding the top material and then again on each nail holding all of the top moldings, the quarter window molding and belt rail moldings. Dave |

Re: Special coupe questions
Thanks, it would seem there must have been something or water could have easily penetrated. Same goes with rain gutter I would think.

Re: Special coupe questions
Vern,
What I have seen on several bodies is that there was a strip of black "dum dum" that was positioned within the area where the wood came into contact with the sheet metal. This would hold true where ever a nail was placed that way, for sure, no water or moisture would get thru the nail hole...and for sure to do as Dave recomends also for double coverage. You can get this material at any refridgeration dealer. It is black, is about 1 to 1-1/2 inches wide and about 1/16to 1/8 inch thick...it is very soft to work with and comes on a roll with paper between. Pluck |

Re: Special coupe questions
In 1979 my new 79 Malibu Fordor had a roof leak in water gutter ... Dealer filled the void with what he called "Dum Dum".
After a few months it hardened and made a permanent repair. The Dum Dum went 300,000 miles and was still there when Chevy went to China to make razor blades. From Chevy forum: bowtieollie ChevyTalk Subject Matter Expert Posts: 21220 bowtieollie 12-05-11 05:42 PM - Post#2165436 In response to AussieJohn Hello AussieJohn, DUM DUM equivalent would be 3M Strip Caulk. It does come in black. Additional note from Benson: Ace Hardware also carries a brown colored version of it called Strip Caulk. Last edited by Benson; 12-20-2018 at 02:47 PM. |
