What you need for your Diesel engine is an Oxygen scavenger additive, usually contains a nitrite which ties up the oxygen in the antifreeze. The oxygen in the antifreeze is what causes the neatly drilled pinholes in the cylinder walls and ruins the engine. I could provide more info about antifreeze, but it only results in jokes or insults.

I used to read on here NEVER use antifreeze in your Model A engine. Story was if it ever got into your pan it would eat the babbit. Has something changed?

Same thing is true for any engine.If it gets into the pan in a modern engine it wipes out the babbit too.The babbit is just a little thinner in a modern engine.It doesn't attack it because it is babbit,it just wipes it out because it is not a lube.It's like trying to use water for oil.

Comparing antifreeze to Catsup, "wunder" if I can buy a GALLON Jug of Catsup??? That would last out for 27 Lbs of Fish Sticks or Hot Dog Weiners.

Well, the boiling point is dependent on how much antifreeze you mix in with that red stuff, no matter what you call it.

My local ACE Hardware stocks SIERRA which I also like due to its non-toxic contents and resistance to foaming. I use it with DISTILLED WATER at around $1 per gallon at Stop & Shop.

For antifreeze, it is all about price, and not the 50-50 stuff! To me, ethylene glycol is ethylene glycol, and if it is sold as antifreeze, low price is always my choice! What I try and do is have in the back of my mind my current garage inventory, and I try not to buy this stuff when I need it but rather when on sale! It does require being aware of the best prices!
