Some nice vehicles. Unfortunately, they did not stay in the judging tent for very long, for obvious reasons, so I didn't get to see them. :-(

36 cars in Touring Class as well. I managed to get a 488 score and the MARC of Excellence on the blindback. Great tours from the host club, and pretty good weather until it absolutely poured after the banquet. We had a great time.

Great job all!

Mark Maron, the signs on the tent said judges only for most of the day. When I finally got out there, there were only two cars left in the tent. It was still light, so it must have been 7:30 or 8:00 PM.

The cars were in the tent, but both ends of the tent were marked with several signs that said "no admittance unless accompanied by a judge" or something of that nature. I did not think we were allowed to go in to see the fine point cars. Sorry I missed it. If we were supposed to be able to go in and see them, I wish that had been made clear.

This might be a topic for a new thread... What's the main difference between "fine point" and "touring"? Am I right in assuming the touring cars just have some modern safety options that were not original?

Basically NIGHT AND DAY. Fine point cars are restored to the same quality and better then when off the assembly line. Most of fine point is 100% original parts and NOS Parts. The Touring class can have anything it wants.. IE: Black Model a STYLE Generator.. Fine point must match, month, year, finish, bolts, nuts ect.

In regards to the signs on both ends of the tent: During judging, non-judging people are not allowed. Judges are discussing things. Folks might try to influence judges. The area around a vehicle is limited and sometimes the judges must wait for other judging teams to finish. We asked non-judging people to leave several times. Almost all were totally fine and understood what was going on. Only a couple seemed to take offense when being asked to leave. We are amateurs trying to do the best possible job in judging that we can. The less distractions that we are exposed to the better.

As for viewing: This is a pet peeve of mine. There should be plenty of time for folks to view these vehicles after the judging. Some places like the MAFCA Colorado meet last year had a particular time for viewing and the venue was close by. I was able to stand by A495 last year for over two hours to answer questions and talk to folks.

At the MARC meet in Niagara Falls many fine point cars were at the picnic after the Grand Tour. This year the 34 mile tour and the threat of rain might have been the limiting factors. For those wondering, fine point cars are as road worthy as any. Sometimes the longer the tour the greater possibility of chips, gravel, dirt, etc. If you are going to show a car again and hope for top points, these factors can limit your enthusiasm of participating on a tour.

These are tremendous vehicles. They should be viewed. It was my understanding that the owners were going to be by their vehicles this year to answer questions. Though I had brought A495 there was limited room so I was unable to display "The Odd Duck".

I do hope that those organizing meets in the future will consider an extended viewing period. Why not start the judging (do half of it) the night before, finish it by noon the next day and then have the rest of Wednesday (noon to 9:00pm) for viewing.

One reason for the smaller numbers of fine point cars each year could be that people are not exposed to them. The folks who restored them have invested a great amount of time, money, sweat and effort to get these vehicles to look like those that rolled off the Ford assembly lines. Sharing their stories, enthusiasm and ability to see these vehicles might spirit others to attempt such a challenge.

All I am saying is let's enjoy these vehicles by having a better chance to view them at our national meets.

Thanks,
Dean

Dean,

Not to be 'snarky' but most hotels don't have an arena on their property. French Lick had the closest enclosed building with all other Meets the 'show room' being off location.

Finding a suitable enclosed building nearby is becoming increasingly difficult with liability & insurance issues, difficult fire marshals and town officials.

At Gettysburg the Fine Point car tent was right in front of the host hotel with viewing from 6 - 9 PM. The only other activity was the Ice Cream Social. Between 8-9 the tent was very crowded with folks who made the effort to see the show cars.

A few years ago in Lexington KY there was an indoor room where they were judged and later in the evening it was open for viewing.

I was able to view the cars during this time but the yellow ribbon was still up at the entrances and I asked if it was ok to go in and was told yes. The cars were beautiful.

Dean, the signs never came down. I certainly understand why no one except judges were allowed in the tent while the judging was going on. Fine point judging must be extremely taxing, and the judges do not need any distraction. But--the signs never came down. I just wasn't forward enough to walk past the signs, or to ask for a judge to escort me. If this was the viewing time, I certainly didn't feel welcome to view the cars. Sorry I missed them.

Jim, I don't think that you were snarky. My point being that somehow we should have the ability for folks to see these wonderful Model A's.

I think that the Gettysburg folks did a great job to have that tent out in front of the host hotel. However, also having the fine point vehicles at the grand Tour picnic is a great idea. Having the viewing hours increased by splitting the judging is another idea. There are many reasons that it is difficult to see the fine point cars. For example at the Dallas world meet the cars had to pull out of the judging area right after judging because the space was going to be used for a wedding. However, during that meet several folks put their fine point cars on display in the parking lot at a hotel across the street from the host hotel.

The point being, we can come up with many reasons why not. Let's think out of the box to find a way how to. At the Dallas meet Enrique Klein, Dave Lopes, Marco Tahtaras, Gary Karr, and others said let's find a way to do this even though the meet cannot. Interestingly enough this is the meet where Mark and Val Maron saw these cars and gave them encouragement to do their Roadster to that level. Eventually their Roadster earned a Henry and has been a Best of Show.

I applaud all who plan and host these meets. To request more showing time for fine point is not to detract from what they've done but is merely a suggestion for those who plan meets in the future.

To others I say that a great way to see the vehicles is to volunteer to be a judge. Each area has a team that judges each specific area. Each team needs someone to record the points and comments on the tally sheet. Each team has a leader or two who are experts. They explain what is good and what needs to be improved. The group then does a consensus to arrive at the points earned. There is learning at each step along the way. Anyone who is contemplating a restoration or just wants to learn has this great opportunity. Get involved. Volunteer.

Hunter had his 1929 Special Coupe in the fine point tent for the whole meet. It is a past Henry award winner. It was the only car in the tent after the ice cream social when we went out. Many thanks to Hunter.

The host hotel at the 2011 MARC National Meet in San Diego had a 45K square foot conference center on property that we used for judging and an evening reception and car viewing, all under air conditioning and lighting. It was one of the reasons we chose that hotel.
