Throttle linkage

My accelerator button is stuck almost at the floorboard, so the engine races. I shut it down immediately. The linkage seems to be OK - no broken springs or links. I can free the button to the "up" position with a screwdriver. Is WD-40 on the linkage and springs all that is required? That seems too simple. There is nothing in any of the repair books on throttle linkage. What to do?

Is your toe board fastened to the floor flanges properly? Is the hole in the toe board sufficient to allow easy movement? Have you dropped some oil in the wicks on the throttle shaft? (By the springs). Also is there any conflict between your hand throttle mechanism engagement with the foot portion of the throttle?

I have found that many of the after market floor boards have the the hole drilled just a little off. When the accelerator is pushed down it jams against the plywood and holds the pedal from returning to an idle position.

Pull the floor mat back and double check to eliminate this as a problem. If it is the problem then get a Rat tail file and enlarge the area where the arm touches. If this isn't your problem the there are two oil points on the accelerator assembly that require a few drops of oil. If you have a good strong return spring and the accelerator is not returning then you may have a bent rod that is binding.

Might unhook the throttle rod at the carb to check that the linkage is free. Also check to see that the throttle is free on the carb. Oil, or kroil at each connection from the steering column to the carb. I have found the throttle frozen at the carb.

Other people have refered to it but I want to be sure they understand what they are talking about. Where the throttle shaft passes behind the engine it goes through a bracket that is bolted to the engine. The bracket has a hole in it for oil just above the location the shaft passes through. Place a couple of drops of oil in these holes. Something you would miss if you don't know about it.

I put a little penetrating oil in the wicks on the linkage shaft. That loosened up the linkage so that the accelerator moves freely. Thanks for the help.

Glad you worked it out. When all linkages are working/lubed correctly, the engine should promptly return to idle whenever the gas lever isup and your foot is off the pedal
