window regulator "buttons"

I doubt that's what they're called, but my regulators(rear side)on a two door sedan, are really rusty & I'm not sure the parts that go in the channel are okay. I can get them in the channel but they seem to slip out. Maybe it's because I'm tilting the glass too much. I've been fighting this for awhile now & I don't know if I need to replace them of if I'm just not being careful enough when I tilt the glass. Any help appreciated, Rod
