Model A suppliers have an excellent product in a small tube, but beware that it does stain upholstery and clothes.

Use a graphite based oil/grease. The Model A stores sell this product but I just purchased some at NAPA last week.

The cable should be removed from the housing, wiped clean with a rag and coated with fresh cable lubricant.

I sent the following email to the Lubriplate Lubricants Company:

What type of grease should be applied to automobile speedometer cables?

Response from Lubriplate: We recommend LUBRIPLATE Aero.

There is the old standby, that has been used for decades - VASOLINE. It stays soft and pliable in cold weather and does not run or melt, in warm weather.

I used to use vasoline in tail light sockets to keep out corrosion, until I found the bulb heat made the vasoline migrate to the bulb glass. Now I use hight temp grease in bulb sockets.

Interestingly, lubes migrate to the heat source. It's a natural physic's thing.
And once heated up is 'displaced' by the cooler lube.
Kind of like Henry's 'Thermo-Siphon'.

That's why oil is important in cooling the churn, as much as water...
