I've seen a lot of rust and grease colored engines. Pretty sure it's not factory spec...

RED is the easiest color to keep clean.
White hides the imperfections.
White makes things look bigger than they are.
Black makes things appear smaller than they are.
Black shows everything.

And...the angle of the dangle is equal to the mass of the ass.

Sears also painted their rebuilt engines blue. Maybe they painted some red, or it was another large outfit that painted them red for recognition.

#17 regarding red 9N engines. The 2N and the 9N Ford tractor engines were a dark grey from the factory. It was the 8N (late '47 to '52) that was red. FYI go to Just 8Ns.com for a history lesson on Ford tractor N series 4 bangers.

There was a big Sears service center in Manchester N.H.years ago. They would install what they sold, and they got their engines done at two places, both within a stones throw of the store. One place painted them gray, and the other painted them either a light gold,or a silver that kind of discolors over the years and looks like dirty gold. They sold a lot of those around here.

Sorry I knew that, it is a bad habit. My dad had what was actually a 2N painted Red/Gray growing up, he always called it "the 9N" and for 28 years I even called it that. I never researched it, and he never did, just went on what the previous owner called it, as well as the axle is stamped 9n if I recall.

About a month ago actually we found out It's really a 2N. It never mattered as it was always just a workhorse for us.

I painted the engine silver in my sept.29 strip down. I thought it looked cool that way when I was 14. When I put it back together I wanted it to look the same as when I was a kid. Still looks cool 50 years later.

My 29 CC pickup came with 40K on the odometer (obviously 140K if not more) and with a red engine. No numbers on that engine in fact the number field has not been "burnished" off so it probably never had a number. I'm going to have that engine rebuilt (the current engine is from a 1930 Ford) and then stamp it to match the frame number.

Yeah, yeah, I know you're not supposed to do that. But you gotta understand title rules in Cow Hampshire are slim to nonexistant.
