Default 5.50 x 19 Radials

I searched the threads but couldn't find the posting about where it was that had the radial tires and tubes that featured free shipping. Any input?

I don't know of anyone that has a 5.50 x 19 radial...Summit doesn't. But Summit does offer free shipping on orders over $100. They do have a variety of 19" bias ply tires for As.

Speedway, Summit Racing & Jegs all carry these tires. Usually free shipping. You might even try Coker themselves. They have been known to offer free shipping from time to time.

I have about 2500 miles on my set of these tires. IMHO are the best out there.

Hi Joe,

1. I called Coker a few days ago about their 19" Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial Tires for Model A Fords.

2. Coker offers either their 500R19 "radial" tire, (SKU: 741761) @ $253.00; or their 550R19 "radial" tire, (SKU: 741771) @ $271.00.

3. Coker recommends using "only" their 500/600-TR-150 "radial" tubes, (SKU: 86431) @ $46.00 for both of these radial tires which comes with a 3-5/8" long center rubber stem, 1/2" diameter at the base. This particular size "radial" tube is not offered with their shorter 1-1/2" metal stem. Some say they have difficulty adding air with this long rubber stem .... (See further below "added" metal stem).

4. Summit & others have the above tires and tubes; however, sometimes, one has to type in the above listed Coker "SKU" numbers to find same, as opposed to entering only the tire or tube description.

4. Also, with Coker, for a material charge of $10.00 for each metal stem, plus a $5.00 "vulcanized" installation fee, they can provide this same recommended radial tube with metal stems for an additional $15.00; hence, with centered "vulcanized" metal stem each such tube would cost $46.00 + $15.00 = $61.00.

5. Have no idea if Summit or others offer these Coker recommended tubes with metal stems added.

Many outstanding Forum reports on overall Model A performance & safety for installing radial tires as opposed to bias tires.

I'll ask Coker a few more questions maybe tomorrow .... I just picked up my five (5) newly powder coated 19" wheels today.

Thanks Mr. Carl, Mr. LaVoy, & so many others for their wonderful reports on their Model A Radial tire improvements in handling etc.

Hi Joe,

FWIW:

Coker's website listed Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial 19" Tires, with Coker recommended "Radial" tube individual prices as follows; however, "if" one wants a set of five (5) new Coker radial tires & (5) new Coker radial tubes:

A. Five (5) Coker Radial 55019 (SKU: 741771) tires @ $271.00 each = $1,355.00

B. Five (5) Coker Radial 50019 (SKU: 741761) tires @ $253.00 each = $1,265.00

C. Five (5) Coker Radial 500/600-TR-150 (SKU: 86431) tubes, with 3-5/8" long center rubber stems @ $46.00 = $230.00

D. Five (5) Coker Radial 500/600-TR-150 tubes with custom provided shorter 1-1/2" long vulcanized metal stems added by Coker @ $61.00 each = $305.00

E. Most expensive combination for a five (5) tire set is with Coker's 550R19 radial tires and Coker added center vulcanized metal stem on Coker radial tubes is from above A + D = $1,355.00 + $305.00 = $1,660.00.

My Canadian B. F. Goodrich tires on my 1930 Town Sedan are over 40 years old, hard as a rock, not flexible, & have very little wear because this car was in collectors' heated garages for over 30 years.

When trying to compare $1,660.00 for new Model A radial tires ...... to trying to restore a possible totaled Model A after a 40 year old bias tire blow out .......... plus, maybe possible hospital and/or funeral cost ..... plus cost for the party after the funeral which we will not attend ..... it is no wonder some neighbors think we are whatever some neighbors think we are.

Do check with Summitt on price before you buy. When I was shopping around about 6 months ago Summitt had the same Coker tires for $100 each less than Coker, and had the free shipping. I had them dropped shipped to the tire guy to mount.

If one types in the above listed Coker SKU numbers "today", Summit's Coker's 550R's are $271.00 same price as Coker; and Summit Coker radial tubes are $5.97 higher; i.e., $54.97 as compared to Coker's $46.00 tube price.

Did not check Coker's shipping cost yet for (5) sets of 550R's w/tubes.

When I got mine a couple of years ago, I bought the tires from Summit and the tubes, with metal stems, from Coker, so it sounds like the pricing has not change. I have been very happy with mine, although I have a slight leak in one that I assume is around the metal valve stem. It is not bad enough to cause me to repair it, as yet.

Also FWIW: Coker's SKU Number Caution!

1. Coker's "Excelsior" tires were formerly ..... and still are called racing tires.

2. Now not now in production ...... a few years ago ...... Coker initially made an "Excelsior" 500-19 tire, (SKU: 74176), now reduced and on sale everywhere for about $124.16; & an "Excelsior" 550-19 tire, (SKU: 74515), now also reduced and on sale everywhere for about $133.37; however, both were named "Coker Excelsior", but more specifically named by Coker as "Coker Excelsior Comp V". Today, both have been replaced with Coker's Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial 19" tires with entirely different SKU numbers.

3. Caution: Always look at Coker's SKU number in any tire sale's ad anywhere as opposed the Coker "Excelsior" name. The cheaper, former "Excelsior Comp V" .... sometimes advertised almost everywhere by others as a "Coker Excelsior Tire" is a no longer manufactured ................. and they are Coker's former cheaper "bias" tire as opposed to todays's Coker's more expensive replacement "radial" tire.

$1660 for tires and tubes PLUS mounting is a little steep for most of us when $100 Vietnamese tires are available. How many of us actually put more than a thousand miles a year on our cars?? JMO FWIW

Well since I do put over 1000 miles a year on my A, I have been wondering about the Coker radials. I can get over the price of the tire but the price on their radial tubes makes me hesitate. I recently bought two tubes from different vendors. The one I got from Snyder's said it was suitable for bias ply or radial tires and it was under $20. Has anyone used those tubes with the radials, and if so any input for us.
Thanks, Dirk

I have had my radials over a year, 2500 miles and happy as a clam at high tide. I think that if I had known of the option for the shorter metal stems, I would have gone that way.

To add to Mr. Joe's Coker "Radial" tire discussion, I just spoke to a Coker Representative:

He said that:

A. Coker talked about possibilities of producing Coker Excelsior "Radial" 500R and 550R tires in whitewalls; but as of today, "Radial" whitewalls will not be produced by Coker in the very near future.

B. Also as mentioned before on this Forum, he said that their Coker printed rim width for Coker "Radial" 550R tires should be approximately 4.00" - 5.00", like the Coker "Radial" 500R rim width as opposed to the incorrect recommended printed rim width of 3.25" - 4.50".

C. Coker does not offer free shipping and shipping varies according to distanced shipped .... like in some cases approximately $12.00 to $20.00 per each 550R tire with matching tube .... and one has to give one's zip code address for exact shipping cost.

Hope this helps a little.

Personally, I think the 5.50 look too large on the Model A and not very authentic? I've gone for the 5.00 but have yet to mount them to see if they look any better.
I'm hoping for a slightly softer ride with the radial side walls.

What about 21 inch radials. They have a photo of one mounted on a 29 model A wheel, but do they fit ok?

Summit will price match if you press the issue. And still give you free shipping.
