DAy 8 - Shop Tour #2 - Ron Magnus. One of the premier upholsterers on the west coast and one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet. With few employees, some who have been with him for over 30 years and that includes some family members, he puts out high end upholstery jobs for some of the most beautiful cars out there ....

Earl and I got separated from the group and ended up at his shop about 1/2 hour before everyone else. Ron came out, introduced himself and spoke with us for a few minutes. Just a really nice guy with a passion for what he does ....

Day 8 - Shop Tour #4 - Stockers. Great place with more traditionally styled stuff, they are somewhat new to the scene (I think) but definitely up and coming. Very welcoming, nice shop setup, with plans to expand, you will be hearing about these guys for sure in the coming years ....

I especially liked the resto of the Tom Morris Roadster - a real time machine ...

Day 8 - Shop Tour #5 - The Kennedy Brothers. These guys must turn over every rock, hunt down every lead no matter how obscure, and just simply stumble across some of the most interesting old parts and cars - their parts inventory is unreal and much of it was for sale! And please, do not drool all over your keyboard for some of their flathead stuff ....

The first day of the show for us was Friday as you know. However, there were two open houses in the afternoon that were not to be missed. The first was SOCAL - 3 buidlings, cops controlling the partially closed off street, it was HUGE! Rumored to be the last time they will be doing this, it was one I had thought about skipping but very glad I did not. Plenty of flatties in attendance boys - here are my pics with a couple videos - oh what joy, what rapture!

We got there fashionable late (1.5 hours) and had heard parking was near impossible. We were 4 cars and luckily found 4 spots right up front!

Were there any celebrities in attendance? You be the judge .....

Walden's was the next open house - great fabricators and innovators, their complete rolling frames look like a work of art and a shame to cover up with a body - really!

We made it into the special, invited parking in Walden's lot, and we were in high cotton. Free ice cream and free water, the shop was open and buzzing with tons of folks from all over. I just love their chassis and the components they whittle out of pretty much stock items - very, very nice work ,,,,

Default Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond

So I am filling in about the trip as we did not have very good internet connections. I have pretty much covered our time in LA and Earl and I were on our way to the Pueblo NSRA Rocky Mountain Nats ....

I added pics on posts 113, 114, 115, 107, and added all of the pics and descriptions for Day 8 and 9 - so, please check back through to get the full picture of the shop tours ....

I will pick up where we left off which was leaving Pomona towards Grants, NM as Earl and I were on our way to Pueblo. We left Pomona at 3AM, trying to beat the heat going across the desert. We finally got into Kingman, AZ at about 9:30 and it was all ready over 100 degrees. The reason for going to Grants, NM was because johnrodz here on this board was visiting his wife's family there. It is an 680+ mile trip, we were losing an hour, and you know I started having issues with the car thinking it was vapor lock. As you know, when we got to Grants we found tumbleweed in the carb on Tuesday morning, and thought we had that licked. At this point, we were invited to attend a trip up Mt Taylor, in a 4x4, via the back side of the mountain which is only accessible with a 4x4. We had some spectacular views from areas that few get the opportunity to see ....

Eddie, one of John's b-in-laws, was our tour guide. We first went through San Mateo where Eddie has a small man cave that he goes to hang out in, we passed the old uranium mines, coal mines, and acres and acres of grazing land. This was all part of the 300+ year old Lee Ranch which at one point was 1.5 million acres HUGE! John's wife's family has been part of the Lee Ranch since its inception which was when the Spanish gave the Lee family their land grant ...

The trip up the mountain took quite some time - now this mountain was a volcano millions of years ago when it blew its top and lost 1/3 of its height. The lava flow went on for miles and miles ....

Than night we went to Sandstone Bluffs to catch a sunset - well, it was too cloudy but the location was one out of the movie The Lone Ranger which was shot in and around that area ....

All in all, a fantastic day - thank you so much Eddie, John, and Flora ......

The next day we were off to the NAts in Pueblo but not before a stop at Rick's place in Edgewood, NM - Rick was ont he tour with us and drove the banger owned by Larry, the other NM attendee of our caravan ....

Thank you Rick and Annie for a wonderful breakfast and thank you for spending the time showing us your garage. Love that Stude and Rick's Mod A that is on the left, Rick still has Larry's banger and the other A is someone who needed some help with a few items .... then, after taking some back roads, we were on our way to Pueblo via Rt 25 .....

The front Sustained actually earned quite a bit of attention. 5.75R16, they are a tad smaller than the 6.00R16s and have a better tread look. Kept them at 27 lbs if pressure. The rears are 235/85-R16 Uniroyal Laredo and were kept at 30 lbs of pressure. No problems ....

Some stats - I averaged about 16.5 mpg, temps averaged 165-170, only consumed about 2 qts of oil after 6400 miles of driving (I did do an oil change in Pueblo), we bought about $840 of fuel at an average of $2.15/gallon burning about 390 gallons, the new shocks installed in Pueblo were broken in quite well on the ride home, and other than the issues reported, the car performed remarkably well.

Now for what we thought was vapor lock, it was not. I run 94s which have three settings - as told to me, I was running the middle setting when I should have been in the upper one. That would have eliminated the problems so I have been told by providing more fuel at the altitudes we were running.

I would love to hear what you guys think ....

Although 2 quarts of oil consumed in 6,400 miles IS actually pretty remarkable, there is another long-hauler among us that seems convinced that a quart every 200 miles or so in his 3rd time-refurbished flathead is well-within the "norm". Nevertheless Tom, that little car of yours has proven itself to be WORTHY......the epitome of flathead dependability, as well as cross-country enjoyment. Great trip, and a huge thank you for your frequent updates. DD
