Do you drive your A in the snow or stormy weather?

I've always enjoyed driving older cars in snow or storms...It makes it a little more adventurous.

Took the '29 out after the last accumulation of snow and had a blast. We're in a semi-rural area and its a perfect car to run over to the shop to get some things done after work. Little salt on the roads but it will wash off.

Aside from some drafts around the pedals its not too cold either.

I'd drive it in the rain too but the wipers aren't working yet

Yes.............I've driven over Stevens Pass coming back from an event in Leavenworth. A's do great in the snow. Doing donuts in the skiing parking lot at the top was the most fun.

Dad drove his grandfather's '50 Chevy well into the 1980's before "upgraded" to a '54. One of my earliest memories was piling into the car and wrapping up in quilts to drive over to visit family. That year the ice was so bad the car was frozen to the curb.

My wife has a minivan with heated seats and DVD players that sits in a warm garage. We try to show the kids that all these comforts are just "extras" and not essentials...

Speaking of extras, does anyone still run a manifold heater (with or without a fan?) or a hot water heater?

We drive our Model A Fords in all weather, and year round. Rain storms, snow, and flooded streets, it has seen it all. It is a must that the wife has her hot air manifold heater working. We have had our '29 Tudor for 50 years now and we only have two payments left to make.

When I had my roadster back in the 60's I drove it in the snow as it was the only thing that would go without chains! Long before everything was front wheel drive and good gripper tires.
It would go right along even in deep snow! But you are correct, very drafty and I had no heater in it; feet froze even over the muffler!

We don't get snow but the drafts you guys are talking about are VERY uncomfortable during the warmer months. Heat directly off the exhaust comes in around the pedals and straight up the driver's leg. Lousy design! As for driving in the rain, a couple of years ago while travelling in company with 4 other Model As, we drove about 300 miles in teeming rain and more miles as it eased. No wipers - just Rain-X.
Every time there is heavy rain, the news outlets show idiots driving into water and getting stranded. The 'ol Model A would sail right through without a second's hesitation. How deep would the water have to be to stop a Model A? I think it would have to be a couple of feet.

Newly built AV8 build hit the road here in Wisconsin in the snow and freezing temps! Neighbors thought me to be crazy! My buddy Al just crouched down behind the windshield to get out of the wind! Car is fender less so it means lots to clean up but good fun.

That's what I thought too. In water up to the bottom of the carb, the ignition is still well and truely dry. I suspect that with the sheetmetal trays fitted and the car moving, it would keep going in water even deeper.
We can't use the type of air cleaner you guy do so I bring a tube from the carb, between the choke/GAV rod and the steerring column, then up to an air filter mounted on the radiator stays. Now how deep can I go???? Top of the oil filler? Maybe an extension on that too?

After living in the north and driving in the salt there is no way I would drive one of my old cars in the salt. It will get in seams and place that you will not be able to wash it out. But it will come out when it rust its way out. Back in the 50ts the cars would rust out in 4to 6 years. I think the new ones do much better.

When I had my first Model, in 1964, used to drive it up to
the local mountains here in S. California, after a recent snowfall.
I was able to find a set of light duty truck chains that fit it well,
and it would go right through quite a bit of snow. Those tall skinnny
tires work really well.

"4 to 6 years"? You must have lived in a dry climate! In southern Minnesota some cars, especially mid to late '50's Chrysler products, would have holes rusted through on the rocker panels and headlight eyebrows after one year! Oftentimes left side rocker panels were worse than the right side due to salt spray blasting the left side from oncoming traffic (mostly 2 lane roads).

I drove my 1929 Coupe in Haines, Alaska, for several years. No problem in the snow! Cracking the windshield open an inch or two kept frost off the inside of the windshield. Of course, good winter clothing was a must!

George, I am totally in agreement with you.

I just finished a restoration on a '31 S/W Town Sedan that was driven once on salted Minnesota roads and then parked for 8 years without washing it. The entire bottom of the car was deeply rust pitted...nothing through but what a mess.
I rebuilt all the running gear and engine late last fall and drove it until the first snow. I then took it all apart and sandblasted everything and then painted it. That one drive on salted roads cost me the better part of $5K and what's worse than the money is the loss of body and chassis life of the car.

No way will I drive any of my cars when the salt is active on the roads. No way! Please don't do it.

Back in the 60s I drove my 30 coupe year round, except when the roads were icy. That was when I was young and lived in Huntington New York. Without a heater it was cold at times, even with a blanket and my young wife sitting next to me. I now live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA in a rural area. My 4 A's, '29 Coupe, '29 CCPU, 31 AA and '31 Tudor are fair weather vehicles. During the winter the roads are well salted and I don't want that splashing up and causing rust. If it is clear and dry with rain having washed off the salt and the roads dry I'll drive them even in cold weather But oh the memories of the '60 in the snow are wonderful!

The last time we had snow in my area was about 1987 and it only stuck on the ground for a couple of hours. So I don't drive my Model A in the snow. We only get rain occasionally (although it rained yesterday and today ). So, again, I don't drive the Model A in the rain. Luckily we have lots of sunny days all year round so I can drive almost any time I want.

I put 50 miles on the Tudor today. Picked up the grandkids from school. It was 20F out and not to chilly in the car. Last Christmas we took the other Tudor out with Christmas lights on it. It has a manifold heater, but the 20 below temps that night made the heater not very helpful. Windows stayed clear until we ran by Starbucks for hot chocolate. Windshield fogged up quickly and I had to keep the drivers side window partly open to see out the windshield. It was such a fun time we will be doing it again this year with the new Tudor.

Rain bothers me. I don't like the idea of it getting into the door seams or the cowl. Anyone ever see a cowl rust? Lol. Salt is the real deal killer. My 2000 Ford Explorer that I bought new is all rusted from close to 20 winters. I'm sure my A would fare no better.

I find that the Model "A" drives well in fresh snow, but not good once the snow is trampled and slick.

I drove through a deep puddle in Virginia Beach once, and water was streaming out of the hood louvers. The running boards were under water. The Coupe kept on running!

A couple questions: Do you know the history of this car? Did it start out as a mailman's car? Will it run on top of snowbanks after a typical Minnesota blizzard, or do you need solid footing?

That's why I only wipe down my car, never wash it, and try to never get caught in the rain.


Salt on the roads is an absolute that the car gets parked until at least two heavy rains have washed ALL the salt off the roads. This really limits driving in MN, but it sure helps to save the cars.

It was 28 F degrees out a few days ago and the road graders were out plowing my street, so l hand cranked up the Phaeton and parked it out by the sidewalk.

My father and uncle purchased it in 1948 or '49 from a rural mail carrier in northern Minnesota. Prior to that, I know nothing as to when it was made, but I do know it was modified in St. Cloud, MN, which is where I live. It was made in the Pan automobile plant after Pan went out of business. I was ten or so when it became a member of the family, so I am very aware of the history from the late 40s.


As for running on top of snow banks, forget it. We always carried a shovel! Getting stuck wearing the skis, it was nearly impossible to back out because the skis would dig in so we usually had the tires on. It was usually run on Lake Kabetogama in northern MN in the winter pulling the family with our wooden skis or toboggans. I have many memories of "Ol' Betsy".

Our speedster has neither a roof or windscreen wipers and we drive it in all weathers. As a rule, so long as we are going 30mph or more we stay dry, otherwise we carry a big umbrella for traffic lights and traffic jams. Rainex on the windscreen is a big help. Also no heater but the right clothing and the Vee windscreen which shelters us from the wind makes winter driving acceptable

They don't salt the roads here.

They used to just use gravel, and plow, but now they also use chemical de-icing. I have only had my A for a year and a half and this year it's put away for the winter, pending me finishing putting a top on and having it painted. Last year I drove around a bit in the snow and found it to be a little different experience, but a hoot. It didn't drive bad in the snow....I would probably guess that anyone with decent experience driving any rear-wheel drive car in snow will instinctively know the moves to make to keep an A on the road. Mine also leaked like a sieve, so driving in the rain was an issue. Hopefully with the new roof and other sealing of body joints will fix that to a great degree.

It doesn't snow often here , Maybe every 10 years or more . I drove our 31 standard coupe in the snow of 1977 . I had knobby Allstate mud grips on the back and they didn't use salt on the roads here back then . I had no problems driving the A in the snow . People with modern cars had lots of problems . They were asking people to stay off the roads if possible unless you drove a four wheel drive . The 4x4s and me in the model A was about the only ones that had no problems . The ditches had lots of modern cars that had slid off the road and could go no farther .

We got caught in a storm in 06 while driving the roaster with no side curtains . To make it worse it was at night and we had about 50 miled to go . We got soaked but made it home OK .

Mostly salt, under various fancy chemical names: sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and potassium chloride. More recently various liquid mixtures are sprayed before a storm. These are often waste by-products from other industries.
The cheapest form of salt available is the most common, although among the most corrosive. I worked at the Arizona Highway Dept. for 27 years and saw them go from no salt (just cinders) to applying 300 lbs. of salt per lane per mile per each application. And they ran non-stop during storms.
This was in Flagstaff, where the average snowfall is about 100 inches per year. (And you thought you could find a salt-free car in that state?)
The cinder spreaders would rust out within a couple years so they started buying spreaders made out of stainless steel.

As I mentioned, Arizona uses some other chemicals, but these are more expensive, and only work at certain temperatures. On one scenic road, through Oak Creek Canyon south of Flagstaff to Sedona, a special chemical is used to keep salt run-off out of the Creek (salt kills stuff!). I can't remember what it was, though. Deer and elk that stay for the winter love to get out on the Interstate to lick up the salt. That's also hard on sheet metal!

In CT I think they use a magnesium chloride solution to pre treat the roads. Can't confirm but have heard it's worse for corrosion than old fashioned road salt.

Haven't gotten any snow in a while now and the roads are still white with the crap.

I have taken mine out twice recently but only because I put a new engine in last month and couldn't resist. Usually put it away in early November and get it out in April after a good rain.

Was in Cali a couple weeks ago and while you still couldn't get me to move there I was extremely envious of the 20+ year old cars that were basically pristine.

Drove my Townsedan in the rain once-and only once! It leaked so badly that my GF's daughter was in the back using paper towels to soak up water. Hopefully dad never finds out that I did that.......

When I was in college back in '68-69 and driving my '29 A coupe daily, yes, I was out in all kinds of weather, including heavy snow. Non-pressurized radiator and a simple heater core with a fan never warmed the cab enough to notice on most winter days. I dressed for the weather, and the electric windshield wiper worked fine in everything but freezing rain.

I got my Phaeton from the VOLO Auto Museum in Illinois and actually flew there to view the car before purchasing. It was December 2000 and they had just received a 2 inch dusting of snow the week before.


When test driving her for the first time, we went down a side road that had no prior traffic and I was going about 25 mph as the mechanic was giving me pointers about the workings of the Model "A". By the time we both realized we were almost out of road (it was a cul-de-sac) I turned the wheel and we spun around in a 360. He made me sit in the passenger seat on the ride back and needless to say I have been enjoying my "A" ever since, but that was the only time driving in the snow. For safety reasons I do not take it out when the roads are wet, there are too many NUTSOS on the road in normal dry sunny conditions.

Lived in NY before I moved to VA in 1975. The roads up in NY were salted to the extreme. Here living in the Mtns of the Blue Ridge they pre-treat the roads with a brine solution before the ice and snow falls, then follow up with salt. I do not take my As out when there is any chance of salt getting on them. When the weather clears and we have a few rain falls to wash the salt off the road, then they come out to play.

Once my roof integrity is improved, I will have no problem driving in bad weather! Don't want to chance messing up the interior! Ther person I bought the car from did a great job or had someone else do the interior, but they should have started with the Roof! It just looks bad! Roof replacement is planned for this summer, when good and hot here in Missouri so I can get it stretched and nailed properly!

We don't get much snow here in Western Washington, but the A doesn't mind it a bit (I think it snowed back in the 1930's also ). The Autolite manifold heater keeps things toasty warm inside. The biggest drawback is that I have to roll down the window every time I signal a turn...



I was going to school in Eastern Washington in 1966 and took my first A over Snoqualmie pass in the middle of winter. I had a manifold heater on it but no door to control the amount of heat. The heat was driving us out of the car. My partner put one of his books over the hole and held it with his foot. It caught the book on fire! . It was snowing pretty hard also. We were passed quite often, but many times saw those same cars in the ditch a little later down the road. The A had no trouble in the snow.

One time in Ellensburg, however, I did put it a little off the road in the snow/ice. I put it in first gear, let the clutch out, advanced the throttle a little, and jumped out and pushed. I did catch up to it before it went in the ditch again.

When I returned home after WWII the first thing did was get my 1930 Coupe out of storage and it became my daily driver for quite a few years. I put about 8 cement blocks on the rumble seat floor to give me good traction from their weight. Even although I did not have knobby tires I could drive on unplowed roads as long as the snow depth was not more than 2 or 3 inches over the front bumper height. I used to blast through drifts but one day tackled one higher than the radiator, was half way through when I could go no further, and with the extra weight I easily backed out. Even after the Coupe became a second car in the 1950's it remained the winter driver until it was repainted and reupholstered in the early 1990's. Since then it has not been driven in the winter.

I had been in wa state (greater seattle area) 3 0r 4 years when we had a much deeper than average snow storm. 16" behind garage door. I really needed to go to store. there was no chance my newer 2 wd pickup was getting out. there is a sizable rise out of driveway to road. sometime before that I had bought a bunch of "A" stuff. in it was a couple 19' wheels with old snowmobile tires mounted. these were made by a co in Wisconsin, arp I think. these had a heavy crossways lug about every 4 ', to fit between the pads on tracks to prevent spinning. I looked at these, and my 31 roadster and gave a resounding "hmmm". so I mounted these wheels on car, and opened garage door. that car dug two trenches out of shop, with snow and dirt flying. it clawed its way up the driveway and onto road. down the road at 30 mph, with people looking at an old roadster out at nite in a snowstorm. I got to the store and back without incident, and sold the tires for $100 a piece

That is a good looking tudor . I also run Insa tires on my roadster and just love them . I feel that Insa tires may last forever like Allstate tires do .

The tires are actual Universal brand from Coker, but there are probably other brands out of the same mold from the same factory.

Year round, our 1930 Pickup serves us well. Last night we didn't put our car cover on it and it got clobbered with 14 inches of fresh snow.

Was that storm Jan 27th 1969? … Parts of Seattle got 45 inches that day.


We were on a DC-8 coming back from Vietnam.


I was not ready for a second Tet Offensive and was so glad to get out of Vietnam before Jan 30th came around again.


The Anchorage AK airport was socked in due to snow so we refueled at Cold Bay near Russia in Aleutian Islands.


They let us land at McCord AFB.

I looked at these, and my 31 roadster and gave a resounding "hmmm". so I mounted these wheels on car, and opened garage door. that car dug two trenches out of shop, with snow and dirt flying. it clawed its way up the driveway and onto road. down the road at 30 mph, with people looking at an old roadster out at nite in a snowstorm. I got to the store and back without incident, and sold the tires for $100 a piece
