Re: USB 5v power from Model A 6v geni/battery
I have a small ACE 12 volt power pack which has a power plug and is rechargeable.
It easily fits under my front seat and powers every accessory you can imagine for days before needing an overnight charge. They are often on sale for $30. |

Re: USB 5v power from Model A 6v geni/battery
I have hooked them up directly as well and with older chargers for GPS they have worked but with several newer USB chargers for phones they have actually blown the charger. Not sure what is different about these but something has changed.

Based on the number of posts, welcome! How about getting a cigarette lighter, placing the unit inside with what ever is necessary to hold it firm and using a cap for the lighter opening. http://www.dormanproducts.com/itemde...4&SEName=56415

Re: USB 5v power from Model A 6v geni/battery
Here's a DC industry grade 6v to 12v 1A step-up transformer I just purchased for getting 12v. Paralleling 2 of these would deliver 2A. $18 + $8 shipping each.

I think YES, for that application. But don't GPS's run on 12v too?

I mean, they run on 5v, but the cigar outlet is 12v, and it is converted to 5v, as someone stated earlier. Electronics is not my forte'. Chuck

Re: USB 5v power from Model A 6v geni/battery
Several years Tom Wesenbury posted a "how to" on wiring in a cigar lighter for use with a gps, cell phone, etc. complete with pictures and wiring details. I tried finding it with the search function but couldn't so maybe someone else with more experience can do so. Am positive of this as I had our club newsletter editor include it in our club newsletter.

Re: USB 5v power from Model A 6v geni/battery
I bought an insulated lighter socket on ebay for a couple dollars, and I simply wired the center terminal to the ground, and the case to any power source close by. The socket can lay loose on the floor or be mounted with tape or a hose clamp to the steering post. I use it for my GPS, and it works fine with no extra electronic devices needed.
I don't own a cell phone, but others report it also works fine for them. |
