Default 51 Merc brakes replace

Anyone have suggestions on how to best install the two shoe retracting springs? The anchor pin is pretty thin to grab onto with the brake pliers. Also the new springs are quite a bit thicker than originals and there is no room for the plate that goes over the anchor pin between the top of the shoes.
Any help??

Get the proper springs. The ones you have sound like the wrong ones.

What was wrong with the old springs?

hoffernsp: Here's a few photos of my 51 Merc brakes that may help. Removing and installing new shoes is usually an easy job if you have the correct tools. Are you sure you have the correct kit? Photos below are of 51 Merc. If you need a complete extra spare pair of front 51 Merc "loaded" backing plates complete with all the brake parts and shoes, drums and bearing and grease caps let me know.
Will this help?

I use brake shoe pliers, etc. The parts shown are not 51 Merc parts but installation procedures are the same.

Right tool makes the springs go on without too much trouble.

Thanks for the info. is the plate that goes over the anchor pin and sits over the shoes necessary? I know my 64.5 Mustang didn't require have these. It seems that the springs themselves hold the tops of the shoes from slipping off.
Also The replacement springs seem a little thicker than the stocks and and the plate keeps coming off when replacing the springs. see attached original pic
Any thoughts?
thanks

WAG but there is a slight edge on the anchor pin if you do not have the (plate)fully on it will sit proud enough that the springs will not seat.never myself seen springs that are fatter but.

Interesting on the 64 mustang brakes. I had never noticed that, looks like the later years used them (as I remembered). Most of the drum brakes I have worked on have the retainers. The second image is for a 66 mustang. Looks like Ford decided that the omission for the 64 model year wasn't the best idea.

Was the anchor pin cleaned real good with a wire brush or wheel?...clean the hole in the anchor plate also....so it goes on all the way......it was already asked but, can you use the old springs?.....Mark

I learned a long time ago that reusing brake springs will result in come-backs. The springs cycle every time the brakes are applied and eventually they will fatigue and either let the brakes hang or even snap. Same thing goes with repairing any wear to the shoe support pads when doing a brake job.
