Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
Anyone done this? Looks like might be clearance problems with oil pan.

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
Not a common mod with a flathead engine. Any reason to go this direction? Seems like a lot of work for a stock type application, more of a street rod thing.

Very common installation even with a flathead. No clearance issues.
Check out the HAMB site & do a search, lots of info. |

I did a 39 car with a Heights MII had a pan maybe a truck with large cleanout hole.
If you keep part of cross member you can bolt like a stock setup. Once you do that you can go any engine you want. Flathead with c4 works good. |

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
I did mine a few years ago and love it. It really made my truck a lot more fun to drive. I used a Chassis Engineering bolt-on cross member. I was able to keep the original cross member/motor mount. Some trimming of the stock cross member was required but that was done with a reciprocating saw making it a no welding, basic hand tool install. Note that you will have to modify the steering shaft to fit the steering rack and that changes the stock horn and light wiring.

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
We put a junk yard unit under a 52 PU back in the day, I think we paid 50bucks for te complet front end. Unfortunately we had to use the 4 bolt hubs till we could come up wit the 5 lig units. Reall worked great. Yhat's why the old auto mags were great. they told you how to do thing like this, untoll the advertizers shut them down. "Street Rodder" was the best. I think they started the street rod industry.

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
The "street rod" industry actually got started by a few hard-core old-timey hot rod guys with some interesting ideas, like Pete Chapouris and Jim (Jake) Jacobs, aka Pete & Jake. They had a few new, slick ideas to help "wanna-be" hot rodders get started in the "easy way" of building an old Ford chassis. Of course, P&J were tight with Bud Bryan who was "ROD & CUSTOM MAGAZINE". Who could forget Bud's outrageously beautiful '29 highboy roadster? Rod & Custom continued to push traditional hot rods until the writing was on the wall........and HOT ROD MAG shut R&C down. Tom McMullen was in the right place at the right time to start-up "Street Rodder Mag". Of course, "Street Rodder" today is not much more than a convenient monthly compilation of STREET ROD parts and services companies. R&C was always the "real, traditional hot rod" magazine. DD

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
Well blow me down! I have done several mustang II installations, but never seen one with a flathed engine before. Learn something new everyday.

Fourdy, nice installation, I can see a lot of engineering and measurements went into your work, beautiful.

Thanks Barners for all replies. Glad to hear it will work. Old school is cool but handling and ride are more important at my age.

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
Over the years I've built several customer 35-40 chassis with Mustang II front suspension, 9 inch rear on CE springs and Flathead power. Really improved the ride.

Re: Mustang II with flathead in 35-40 frame
George helped me out with my 40 a few years ago. By saving part of the stock crossmember you don't lose the radiator mount. Talk to George, he'll walk you thru it, Chuck

Chassis engineering? I was planning on buying the front end dropped axle kit for my 36. Anybody have one of kits for sale? Or maybe a suggestion for another kit Last edited by 36coupe; 12-19-2017 at 08:19 AM. |
