Drag Link, Tie Rod and Toe-In....
Hello,
I have installed a '37 steering box into my '36 Ford pickup. Now I want to install a new Drag Link and a new Tie Rod. Is there a proper procedure for installation of these two items. What gets installed first and what to look out for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bruce in Ca. |

Gearbox (pitman arm)should be centered in middle of travel, front wheels straight ahead. Then you should be able to adjust your new parts to get the Toe-In close enough to get you to a shop. Unless you have a toe in gauge.

Re: Drag Link, Tie Rod and Toe-In....
Hello. I don't know if there is an official procedure, but this is what I would do.
I'd fit the tie rod and set the toe in which I believe wants to be between 1/16" and 1/8" so 3/32" as close as you can. I'd make sure the front wheels are sitting straight ahead by sighting along the tyres and making sure the relationship between both front tyres and the back wheels is the same. I'd then make sure the steering box is sitting exactly in the straight ahead sweet spot. I'd then fit the drag link, making sure it is adjusted so it fits straight in without moving either the wheels or steering box. This is a generic procedure that would hold true for any vehicle.
