Question Ford AA question

I'm looking into design changes during GAZ-AA production. Did Ford-AA have this change? If not, which was used?

I've read that the reason for the loss of the sixth hole was supposedly to be easier to assemble and disassemble.

As far as i know AA's had all 6 holes... Check and see if the transmission end had all 6 holes and or crossmember side or not.

I looked at four of them I have and only one has all six holes. I know that at least
two of them that are cut are off of 1931 trucks.

The stock coupling shaft rear support had six bolt holes. This support was inserted through the rear of the #3 cross member. The rear axle had to be moved back to allow the coupling shaft to be removed.

Ford released an aftermarket coupling shaft in July 1932. The five hole rear support was use. It was installed on the front side of cross member #3. The front u-joint for this setup was bolted together allowing the shaft to be removed without touching the rear axle. The top bolt of the rear axle inner/outer u-joint housings was not unbolted.

Thanks very much for your reply. GAZ introduced this upgrade around 1938 on the AA.

A friend of mine upgraded to the late style . He needed to pull the transmission and told me there was no way after he had split the front UJ could he drop the jackshaft far enough to clear. I had to break the news to him he should have put the rear UJ cover on the front side of the cross member not the rear as before,OH DRAT !!!

John in overcast dull morning Suffolk County England.
