Default Gas Shutoff Valve, Indented Firewall

I would like to clean and rebuild the gas shut off valve on my Cabriolet. How do you remove the old packing without damaging the valve stem or the valve body? Thank you, Ed

I just figured it out. Remove the handle and the packing nut. Invert the valve body on top of a vice and with a 1/8 in. diameter pin, gently drive out the valve stem. It will bring the packing with it. Now if I can only make it leak proof with cleaning and new packing. Ed

When I did my T/S in 2008, I installed a new, he lasted 10 years. When I did my 31 Roadster P/U I rebuilt one I had, it lasted 1 month. Both cars a indented fire wall.
Buy a new one.

Please send me you old valves, I chucked the stem into a drill, added some lapping compound, when the stem sticks in the body your almost done. Clean off the compound, grease up the stem, reassemble, reinstall.

I am basically doing the same thing except I am having a new stem manufactured that is 0.008" oversized, and having an oversized tapered reamer made that I can enlarge the gas valve body enough to remove all of the scoring caused by tank rust and debris. Like you, I have found that lapping will work on very minute scratches however my experience has been that it will not remove the larger scores & scratches. Since the reproduction valves are slightly different in shape from original valves, I am hoping this is going to be a way to restore the worn valves.
