Default Steering Wheel Water Marks

I checked the archives here for anything involving cleaning water marks off of a steering wheel. Yesterday my Roadster was subjected to a little drizzle with the top down. The only thing that it did was put little water stains on my red steering wheel. I tried wiping them off with water (fight fire with fire right?) to no avail. I want to be careful because my original is in great shape and does not shed color. What should I use to get this off without messing up the steering wheel?+

I was going to say 600 grit abrasive paper because that is where I finish up after cleaning, epoxying cracks, recutting grooves, and generally recovering an aged steering wheel.

But you may do better and with loss of less material with Dupont No. 7 Rubbing Compound. Classic car body finish treatment/polishing.

If the drizzle marks were there for a while, the water might have penetrated the surface of the steering wheel. I'd try leaving it alone before I tear into it to see if the marks disappear when the wheel is thouroughly dry. Maybe leave it out in the sun for the day.
