Default Carry Jumper Wires in Your Model A

I've always suggested it's a good idea to carry a pair of clip leads in the Model A. They are easy to make your own if you just find some good quality clips. The local surplus store had a box full of quality clips where the wire could be screwed on or soldered on, and the cost was 25 cents each.

Here is a lesser quality clip where the wire can only be soldered on, but this would still work well for the job. You sure don't want to buy it though due to the cost. The price is so out of sight I thought it has to be for a box of 100. I emailed the seller to be sure, and the price is for ONE clip.

Yes, there are people out there waiting to clip you.

I believe the jumper wire are the type that could be use to bypass a failed ammeter, or a generator cutout or other things..I made a few sets of various lengths.. A some spare stranded romex I used...

I was at the surplus store two days ago looking for some wiring terminals. What they had was very poor quality, and I found some nice quality bullet terminals at Little dearborn.

At the surplus store I did find some 48" lengths of 16 gauge wire for a dime and some quality Mueller #27 clips for 15 cents, if I remember correctly. I soldered round eyelet terminals to the wire and screwed the ends to the clips. This makes a quality jump wire to have in your Model A. The Mueller clips are 2 1/2" long overall and the jaws open to 1/2". I'll have to check the other surplus store for some boots to install over the clips.

Probably a good idea, but what is wrong with using the crank to start the car? My 10 y.o. battery just died and that is what I have been doing lately.

Absolutely, but I was speaking about jumper wires, not jumper cables. These are light weight and work well for a bad ammeter or some bad wiring connection.

Hand cranking the Model A is a quick easy way to start it, and you don't have to crank it fast. If the engine is in good tune, all you have to do is pull up to get the piston over compression, and the enigne should fire up.

Thanks, Tom. I didn't read closely enough the first time. It has been very easy for me whenever I have tried it. Fun to do for a change, too.

I'll probably forget this at the time I need it, but where would I clip the jumper?

Wherever the bad connection is. If the repro ignition switch isn't working, then connect the clip lead to the two studs or screws on the switch, to bypss the contacts. If the ammeter fails to make a good connection, then just jump the two wing nuts on the cover. If the cuout doesn't fails, then connect the input and output terminals. If you use a fuse and it blows you can jump across the two fuse clips as long as the short has been fixed.
