Ammeter---Original or Repo
I need an ammeter and I'm going to a swap meet in a couple of 1 1/2 weeks. How do I tell an original from a repo and how will I be able to tell if it's working?

Re: Ammeter---Original or Repo
Ross, the original has silver lettering. A small meter would tell you if it was shorted and/or had continuity.
Is that swap the local Kzoo one? What's the date. Locally, there is one here on Feb. 2nd. Mostly Model A, come visit and stay with us............. Gar Williams |

Here is an original, a pic that I took off a thread here on the Barn. Use the Search feature, Advanced, in the field enter Ammeter, select in thread title, and choose the Model A forum section and you should get good results.

Gar, thanks for the info and offer. Yes, that's the Kalamazoo Swap Meet Feb 1 and 2. I'll be outside Sat morning collecting admittance and then looking for that ammeter.

Re: Ammeter---Original or Repo
In reply #8 I picture an original and a repro ammeter. Many of the repro's I've seen have an aluminum rear cover. All the repro ammeters I've seen DO NOT have the flat black paint on the brass part inside the meter. So, if you look through the needle slot you see brass, but on the original meter you will see flat black paint.
I never worry about the original meter not working because they are easy to fix. The worst I've seen is if the nuts on the rear are loose the connections can overheat and burn the insulating washers or cardboard inside. To test at a swap meet just carry a small 1 1/2 volt battery such as the common AA cell and a short wire. Just connect the battery across the two ammeter posts. This is a dead short, so just do a quick touch of the wire while you look for the needle to move a small amount. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20392 |
