Default visor

The visor at the top of the screen on a model A - is it only the A that had a visor as standard ? was it something that was featured on many other vehicles at the time?

what was the purpose - is it just as a sun shield?

It's a good sunshield to help keep the sun out of the driver's eyes and keep the inside somewhat cooler. Most old cars had them until the early 30's.

Bobby you have to remember to use the American terms on American talk sites. The visor above the windshield was mostly functional as an eyeshade. It was replaced in the slant windshield models with flip down visors on the inside. In the late 40s many cars had external visors added (Fulton, etc).
All eras of cars have styling trends and when one maker sees another come out with an attractive feature they are quick to copy it or drop it if it falls out of favor.here are a couple of contemporary cars with visors.
