Steve, I put the '47 LC in the "new" garage and pulled the coil & distributor to send out for rebuilds... I'll mess with the OD once I've installed the "new" coil, etc.

Tom, sometimes I call it fun... Looking forward to seeing you in Dawsonville, will you have your co-pilot with you...?

Oh No... The Dreaded (some say Non-Existent) Vapor Lock Rears its Ugly Head Again..

Here it is Tuesday, after a long weekend, and the weather here in central Florida is sunny and warm, low to mid 90’s, (some would call it hot ). I had several errands to run this morning, not the least of which was to go to NAPA and pick up (order) a couple of condensers for the ’39 CS so, I thought I’d give the ’39 LZ a workout. We cruised effortlessly to LOWE’S, on to NAPA and back home again, a combined distance of some 30+ miles. Once home, I decided to give the LZ a bath, then I drove her up to the post office and back to the house (round trip about 6 miles) I pulled her into the garage and went up to my office. At lunch time I fired her up and drove to the deli, just across the street from the neighborhood. When I came out and started the LZ… she fired, coughed and died… don’t ya know… Vapor Lock I waited a few minutes (sipped on a cold Root Beer) and gave her another shot, this time she fired up and we drove home… She is now resting comfortably in the garage.

I sure wish I “knew how to build my cars right” so I would never get Vapor Lock My problem is; I like to drive our cars/trucks more than just on and off of a trailer and, in the real world of Corn Gas and old cars… if you really drive em, Vapor Lock happens… (even Henry Ford knew this, just read some of the service manuals from back in the day when our Flatheads were new, Vapor Lock is mentioned more then once) ya just have to deal with it… Now I'm looking forward to my next driving adventure I shall not fear, (nor deny the existence of) Vapor Lock for I have learned (through experience) to deal with it

Vic, I feel your pain. I've got electric fuel pumps in all my flatties for just this occasion - when it happens, I flip the switch and drive on ....

Mine did that but it ended up being moisture in dist cap after I gave it a bath and drove about 15 mile to Mom's house let it sit for a hour or so then had to dry cap out and go home.It has done that 2-3 times. So when it quits go to cap first.Mallory electronic dist.Oh Vic you never answered my PM on large pics. Thanks

Flatmotor40,

Sorry about not responding to your PM, honestly, I don't remember seeing it (CRS). Please send it again and I will answer. Thanks, Vic

Tom,

I have electric fuel pumps in the '47 rag top and the '51 F-1 as primaries, I think I'll be installing them as axillaries in both the '39LZ & '39CS. Vic

While I'm waiting for the '47LC's coil to come back from Skip, I'm planning on doing some maintenance on the '51 F-1 tomorrow, in preparation for the cruise up to the Moonshine Festival in October.

I ordered some oil filters from Joblot (hopefully they will arrive today) so I can change the oil, I'm also going to pack the wheel bearings, grease everything and top off the transmission, rear end and master cylinder (if they need it). Sounds like fun to me.
On a side note, I sure am enjoying having the additional garage space.

Let there Be Light

Today I got most of the "lighting" issues on the '47 LC worked out, and I didn't even burn up the car... Imagine that... I hope to have the rebuilt coil back from Skip on Monday or Tuesday of next week, I'll install it and hook up to OD harness and see if the OD will work... I'm having fun with this car, I can't wait to take her out on an extended road trip.

More like if it happens. Toms little roadster really proved itself on the trip to Bonneville and back. No "vapor lock". Just a piece of styrofoam looking stuff that blocked a main jet. That happened 3 days after installing a re-jetted carb. The symptom was loss of power, but it kept running. Yeah man drive on, Bonneville, The HAMB Drags, Route 66 and more. Keep on touring.

The UPS truck just pulled into the driveway but... no rebuilt coil for the '47LC from Skip... I hope it gets here tomorrow. I went in the garage this morning to see if the LC had burned up... But the only bad thing was the switch, for the light under the dash on the passenger side, had given up the ghost... one of the two brass extensions (where the wires are inserted) on the back of the switch came apart. There was a fair amount of corrosion on the switch (which was not visible until I removed the glove box today). Do any of you know where I might find a replacement (OEM or close) so I can install it? Here is a photo of the switch, installed in the dash. The back side has two brass terminals with set screws to secure the wires with no tips on them.

I ordered the switch from C&G that Coopman posted. I had not done business with C&G since the mid ‘90’s; they still had me in their data base with an address that I moved out of in '97... To give you an idea as to how old the catalog I have from them is; Temperature Sending units for '40 - '53 cost $17.50 each...

Back to the Drawing Board...

I got a call from Skip yesterday, as it turns out, he had rebuilt the '47LC's coil a year ago... He checked it out and everything was fine so... Now, once I reinstall it, we'll have to check voltage, etc. (the coil was getting hot which is why we removed it and sent it to Skip in the first place) We did have to install new ignition resisters prior to removing the coil as they got toasted. I think the 12 volt/6 volt conversion that was installed really messed up the electrical system in the car. We've worked through most of the electrical problems so hopefully we'll get the ignition system worked out this weekend.
